− | It has been a long day of moving. Heading back from the latest of adventures given out by the Guild, out in the middle of the woods, the road hasn't even been found yet to take everyone back to civilization. As the sun set, it was time to settle down for the night in the forest. Items are gathered to allow a comfortable evening and the sounds of the forest, birds, rustling of animals and every now and then a bounding doe and her fawns can be seen off in the distance as the sun sets and the moon begins to rise. It seems a quiet night is in store for all. |

It has been a long day of moving. A quiet night around a campfire, eh? That can mean only one thing to Jibbom: story time! "... And that was how I saved the entirety of Alexandria for the ninth time. Arguably the most heroic time I saved the city... that is, until I tell you the tale of the eleventh time! Needless to say, I was showered with the boundless affection of the grateful cityfolk, particularly the beautiful maidens who marvel in awe at my mighty powers..." It just goes on like this. Munch sighs, returning from his efforts with only a few sticks to show for it. "No luck. Those deer are faster than they look. Guess is trail rations again." The golem, for his part, feeds one stick to the fire, and starts to nibble upon another. Don't judge. "I'll try!" Tatyannah offers, possibly a touch desperately. "Maybe you just weren't quiet enough." She can get away into the woods where it's quiet and Jibbom's voice won't reach. Nevermind, she's not good at survival stuff. She can learn, tonight, even! She starts to collect some things, so she can go. She'll be fine. Probably. "I'm not the best at living off of the land, but I'm not the worst, either," comments Oates. "Of course, given the hour, it might be a better idea to just stick with the trail rations - I'd rather have more daylight for foraging and hunting." And Teppus is here, of course. And has been here. He's quite relaxed, actually, seeming at home on the march and the move as it goes. No problems here, actually. Returning from a nearby brook, Jareth has a half dozen fish all strung together, just in time to hear the tale of Jibbom's greatest heroic achievements. With a laugh, he sets himself down and begins the task of gutting and cleaning the fish to cook them over the fire to add to the night's dinner. Tatyannah is glum when Oates mentions being sensible. Even more so when Jareth comes back with fish. Damnit. She sits back down. Munch blinks at Jareth, watching a few moments. "...wait.... you're just... throwing away the heads? Those are the best part!" Jareth has found the one thing which can distract Jibbom from his rambling, nonsensical tales of heroism and magical powers. "Oooh, food! Gimme, gimme, gimme!" Oates chuckles. "I don't think anyone will begrudge you the fish-heads, Munch," the farmboy chuckles. Jareth puts the heads and innards in a pile, "Help yourself." before he rinses off the fillets with a bit of water and then sprinkling some salt and crushed herbs, rubbing them all in before skewering the fish and setting it over the coals. He leans back on his blanket, using his pack as a backrest as he takes out a bottle of wine, uncorking it and taking a long swig. For Teppus' part, Jibbom seems to've been tuned out a while ago. Jarethr's return, with food, does perk him up, though. "Oh! Thanks, Jareth. That's mighty kind of you." Munch is more intrested in heads than innards, they don't crunch the same, but it's not like the golem is going to turn anything down. He's even polite enough to move downwind first. Jareth starts passing the wine bottle about before digging into that enchanted pack of his. It's amazing what that thing can hold. Two loaves of bread, a half wheel of cheese, and some smoked duck sausage. The man spends a lot of time having dinner with Abrahil. It was inevitable that he'd get used to such foods. "The golem is wise." Jibbom says, grinning. "If you do not eat the brains of your foes, how else do you expect to digest their delicious, delicious secrets?" He takes a long swig from the wine bottle before passing it on and grabbing handfuls of food. Munch peers at Jibbom. "Um.... maybe your digestive system is diffrent... but generally death and the chewing process destroys any secrets the brain had. I just like the texture." "...good gods, man. How much food do you stash in that pack? How in Gaea's name does it stay fresh?" Teppus stares at Jareth with wide eyes, but he's more than happy to share in the food and the wine himself. "It's magic," Tatyannah says as she digs out some rum from her own bag. Well, she can get nice and sloshed. The sunset was actually spectacular, just enough clouds to make it beautiful, a variety of colors, light shining through the trees. The forest continued to seem alive as the nocturnal animals came out as the day ones settled in for the night. The only light is that of the fire dancing happily, shining on everyone and the nearby gear. Now the moon, full and round is rising over the eastern horizon, shining down it's own light, casting the forest into it's own mood. <OOC> Elessa says, "And I need perception checks" GAME: Jareth rolls Perception: (9)+4: 13 GAME: Tatyannah rolls perception: (7)+15: 22 GAME: Teppus rolls PErception: (10)+5: 15 GAME: Munch rolls perception: (1)+9: 10 GAME: Jibbom rolls perception: (18)+4: 22 GAME: Oates rolls Perception: (11)+19: 30 "Fish heads, fish heads, crunchy chewy fish heads..." Munch sings quietly to himself. Well, that's likely supposed to be singing. You paged (Jibbom, Tatyannah, Teppus, Oates) with 'While having plenty of wood, the fire starts to die down to near nothing while all the night sounds of the forest seem to just disappear.' You paged (Tatyannah, Teppus, Oates) with 'You three also notice: Not a moment after that the sounds of hounds baying and a horn comes off from the distance.' You paged Oates with 'Lastly, you notice movement of hounds and a rider can be noticed off in the distance and coming closer, running in fact.' Jibbom joins in the 'singing' for a brief while before looking to the fire, narrowing his eyes slightly. "... Is it just me, or did it suddenly get more creepy around here for some reason?" Tatyannah cocks her head at something, mid swig of run, there's a hissing, "Shut up," from her. She glances at the others to see if someone else can hear it, giving an absent nod to Jibbom. "It's not just you," replies Oates, standing and facing towards the things he heard. "It sounds like there's a hunt out there, and it's heading this way." Settled in for the night with the faint warmth of a buzz from the wine, Teppus stops for a moment and then says, "Did you hear that?" He's sitting up a bit. Munch perks up. "Hunt? Great, maybe they'll chase the deer our way." Jibbom frowns. "Is it the good kind of hunt, with kindly bearded men who offer delicious treats? Or the bad kind of hunt, with mean bearded men who try to put me in a bag?" "A little quieter or /I'll/ put you in a bag," says Teppus to Jibbom. "We need to hide or get high up or ready ourselves against the coming hunt," Tatyannah murmurs. Then, she asides to Jibbom, "No good hunt comes at night." She should know. She goes to get out her bag of toys out, before choosing her tree to climb. Staring at the embers whirling and dancing up into the night sky, Jareth snaps out of his reverie as some of the others mention a noise nearby. Rolling onto his feet, the warrior has hold of his sword and shield as he waits. Munch blinks at peers at Tatyannah. "But I hunt at night.... oh." The camp is then surrounded by several hounds, all deathly white, their ears a blood red color. The mounted rider is a huntsman, but one that is skeleton white, but also see-thru, his mount emanating darkness even in the night. The huntsman has glowing red eyes and appears to have a wicked grin upon him. <OOC> Oates says, "Knowledge for identifying them?" <OOC> Jibbom is gonna make a snap judgment based on appearances, blast him. <OOC> Elessa says, "Local or religion" GAME: Oates rolls Knowledge/Local: (16)+15: 31 You paged Oates with 'There are stories about a Wild Hunt, spirits of huntsman that haunt the forests and on certain nights, certain conditions when innocent folks end up as the prey to the hunt. Mostly ghost stories for campfires.' <OOC> Jibbom says, "Should I roll blastings, wait for inits...?" <OOC> Elessa says, "Wait for init, I was waiting for reactions" Munch peers a moment. "...wait... I think I've gone drinking with this guy..." Jibbom goes wide eyed. "... No beard at all. The worst kind of hunter." Tatyannah is in her tree. She'll stay right there and quiet. The huntsman pulls out a sword and points off into the woods. "Run," he said in a dark and menacing voice, even looking right at Tatyannah. "Run and by whatever gods you worship make it to the morning and you will be free." The direction that he pointed, the hounds moved aside, giving all of you an opening. There are dozens here, of various sizes that even with experience they'd be a challenge to even survive the pack. "...the hell is /that/?" Teppus is shocked and he's reaching for his glaive, quickly. Of course, it's a glaive so it's going to take him a moment to get ready. "Don't think you know who you're dealing with, mister!" <OOC> Elessa says, "Yes you have a chance to get any immediate gear you think you'll need for this merry chase. Note: we are in dim light as we have a full moon" <OOC> Teppus says, "Okay! :D" Oates looks at the Huntsman, then at the rest of the Wild Hunt, then at the gap. "Right, then," he mutters, making sure his gear is secure enough to not fall out/off while still being readily accessible. Munch would quirk a brow, if he had a brow to quirk. "...nope. Must be a different guy. Nobody I've been drinking with would challenge my title of apex predator." Which isn't to say their aren't those who challenge the title. Munch just doesn't go drinking with them. Tatyannah stays where she is, waiting to see on the others, and what they do. "... Or we could just, y'know, blow you up." Jibbom points out. "We're actually pretty good at that." Jareth frowns as he eyes the circle of hounds and the huntsman, "Far be it from me to not liven up at the thought of a good fight, but I cannot help but notice the translucence of our guests here, and there is one thing I have noticed over time, translucent foes tend to have weapons go right through them..." "...it's true. This could be a problem," says Teppus as he gets to his feet. "How do we know you'll live up to your terms, Huntsman?" He's frowning, "And who the hell ARE you?" The hunstman laughs at the threats and lowers his sword. The hounds all growl and start to move in on the group. The opening remains there, behind the party. "Just have to make it to sunrise," is all he says. Six of you against all these hounds. One tries to nip at Jibbom's foot. "Run, and you'll have to see." Munch shrugs. "Normal weapons, sure. Magic weapons, less so. Raw magic, not a problem. Anyway, I don't run, I chase." Humans have a Fight Or Flight responce. Munch has a Fight or Fight Harder responce. Though if the rest of the group were to take off, technically he'd be chaseing them. But since they havn't done that yet, the golem takes his greataxe off his back. "Y'know, we should probably make for more defendable terrain," Oates suggests, looking over the array of hounds and not liking the odds. Jareth nods as he slings his pack onto his back, "Indeed. I'll take point. Teppus, cover our rear, would you please? Tatyannah and Munch, take the flanks. Oates, stay behind me. Jibbom, you'll be our eyes on the sky. Move!" "Can do!" Jibbom spreads his golden wings and begins flapping. Tatyannah jumps down from the tree and says, "All right." Even as she stands there, she makes sure she's got all her armor on just so. Jareth pages: I don't think Munch was grasping the task at hand. Munch buzzes in mild annoyance, then nods, and sighs. "Letting him off easy, just because he's transparent? That's racist, you know." "Transparency is mostly an annoyance; the several dozen hounds are the more compelling argument," Oates points out, bringing one of his toolkits to hand. <OOC> Elessa says, "Alright, so we're on the move. I need two skill rolls from everyone in your attempts to run/hide/evade your foes through the forest. You pick the skills. But you trip several times through the woods, keep hitting those dark roots and branches, but you keep up.' Jibbom takes to the air with the greatest of ease. Well, at least by the standards of a slightly intoxicated, overweight halfling who was never meant to be able to fly. He avoids smacking into anything, at least. Jareth's steps are sure as he runs through the forest, calling out warnings as he leaps over fallen logs and stones. For a man in full plate armor, he keeps up one hell of a brisk pace. You paged Oates with 'You are dropping traps to slow them down or setting up traps for future encounters?' You paged Oates with 'Though either way you're fine. You paged Oates with 'Humanoid, some look like farmers, guards, bandits even' Munch grumbles and trips often, spending a little too much time checking back over his shoulder. He does manage to keep pace, in part by just blowing thru obsticals other would go around. "I still say I can take them..." Oates is often running out of the formation, rigging triplines and springbranches and other hindering traps to help guard the backtrail. Comes the sound from flying Jibbom. Is he actually enjoying this? Munch buzzes softly and flutters his own stubby wings. Some day. Oates is the first to notice, but everyone soon follows suit in spotting figures in front and to the sides of them. They're not the spirits Oates mentioned, but more solid. With unnatural swiftness, the golem's axe sings through the air, slashing through a hound's throat, then swatting aside the soon corpse on the backswing. Jibbom blinks, glancing to see one remaining wolf. "Oop. Missed one." He points at it as an afterthought, blasting it apart with another bright arc of electrical energy. "... right then, as I was saying. Triumphant, once again..." As the huntsman falls, dead, he seems to fade away into dust and then blown away by the wind. Several spirits appear, all human, walking out from behind trees. "Thank you," one man says. "We don't know how long we have been running, but we'd never let him catch us." The sun is starting to rise in the east. You've been running all night. "Ahh... the sunrise... we can rest..." As the light reaches all of you, the spirits seem to fade away in the sunlight, peace on their faces. The hunt is over. Tatyannah gets unparalyzed again, and starts swearing, loudly in Jotun. She goes stomping off in the woods, pissed as hell. Munch buzzes softly as the Huntman fades away. "Told ya. Don't mess with the axpex predator." "...I'll be," whispers Teppus as the spirits fade away. "I'll be damned. Amazing." He's honestly shocked. And pleased. Oates shakes out his arms to make sure his muscles are fine. "Oddly enough, that was kinda fun," he admits. When the party finally reaches the road again, for better or worse, they soon come across a small town with even a tavern and inn all wrapped into one. Rooms are available and it seems that one has returned to civilization again. That night the bard playing for the patrons, while pretty decent, plays into a song that seems more telling for a campfire than a rowdy tavern, not even an instrument was used in this upbeat, but haunting song. It starts off slow, as if starting to tell a story: "John was not an evil man, / Though far from perfect true. / And he spent his days a'rovin' though / He'd wife and daughter too. / He staggered home one drunken night / And paused beneath an oak / To warm himself and rest a while / He'd move on when he woke / And though he built a fire to ward off the evening chill." He speaks slowly at this part: "The embers slowly died from sight / The wood grew cold and still." The song picked up at this point: "John awoke to a huntsman horn," A horn was sounded as if in the distance. "And the bayin' of some hound," Followed by a mimic of a baying dog as the song continued: "'I've stumbled in just before the morn to some noble's hunting ground' / He saw the hound all pallid white / With ears a bloody red / And then he saw the Huntsman / And John was filled with dread." The song continued, fast and furious, like a chase: "Oh run for your life John, / The Wild Hunt's coming' / Comin' after thee / Run for your life, John / The hounds are callin' / Callin' out to thee / Take to the hills / Take to the woods / Hide through the brambles and see / If you can outrun them until the mornin' / See if you can't get free. "Well over hill through forest too / Through streams and thorny briar / The Huntsman and his hounds kept chase / And never would they tire / And John, he knew if he could last / Until the morning light / Why he would have outrun them / And made it through the night / But it was yet some hours until / He'd see the morning sun / And then he heard the hounds again / This chase had just begun." "Oh run for your life John, / The Wild Hunt's coming' / Comin' after thee / Run for your life, John / The hounds are callin' / Callin' out to thee / Take to the hills / Take to the woods / Hide through the brambles and see / If you can outrun them until the mornin' / See if you can't get free." "John made it back unto his home / And saw an awful sight / For it was all abandoned / Or' grown in just one night / 'Full twenty years have come and gone / Since all me drunken days / If I knew then what I know now / I'd change my rovin' ways' / The Huntsman gave a soulless laugh," There came a deep rumbling laugh, the typical evil as the next section was spoken: John cried,'By all good men / I'll never let you have me'" There was an echo of a deep 'Run John' as the song picked back into the chase: "And the chase began again." "Oh run for your life John, / The Wild Hunt's coming' / Comin' after thee / Run for your life, John / The hounds are callin' / Callin' out to thee / Take to the hills / Take to the woods / Hide through the brambles and see / If you can outrun them until the mornin' / See if you can't get free." He now seems to slow down, voice going darker and slower as he speaks: "And if you're there some moonlit night / When the woods grow cold and still / Why you'll see John the Rover, / They say he runs there still." Keeping with the slowness as he goes back to the chorus: "Oh run for your life John, / The Wild Hunt's coming' / Comin' after thee / Run for your life, John / The hounds are callin' / Callin' out to thee / Take to the hills / Take to the woods / Hide through the brambles and see / If you can outrun them until the mornin' / See if you can't get free." Picking back up in speed to the chase from before: "Oh run for your life John, / The Wild Hunt's coming' / Comin' after thee / Run for your life, John / The hounds are callin' / Callin' out to thee / Take to the hills / Take to the woods / Hide through the brambles and see / If you can outrun them until the mornin' / See if you can't get free." Run for your life John, / The Wild Hunt's coming!" To add to the song, another sound of baying hounds is added as the song ends. The tavern is silent for several moments, before the revelry of the night continues as before and soon the evening comes to an end. <OOC> Elessa says, "This adventure is brought to you by the Wild Hunt, written by The Whiskey Bards, published 2005."
