Lately there has been a lot of attacks on merchants and people traveling along a road far from the city. The attackers are obvious, since they have been bragging about how no one could stop them. It is a bunch of centaurs, who attack and run off before the local law enforcement or army have a chance to do anything to stop them. So the adventurers guild has offered a reward to any who could get rid of the bandit problem.
Attacks on travellers? Tarien is often called the god of travellers (among other things). So it's not surprising that one of his followers shows up at the Guild to help put an end to the attacks. Nicolai frankly sizes up other adventurers who arrive, often with a half-grin that would seem to imply that he might be drunk or crazy or both. "I've heard that centaurs have the diet of the man and the droppings of the horse," he remarks to no one in particular.
Cressida sits in the room at the adventurer's guild people are gathering in to discuss the plan. "Well, if they are going after travellers, too, we could always just see about looking like an innocent group of travellers, then reverse ambushing them when they come for us. If hiding as guards on a merchant caravan isn't an option."
Pavanna stretches her arms out a bit. "Nothing wrong with actually joining up with a smaller caravann to assist in that guise as well I would think." She adjusts some of her scalemail for a moment to get it to sit just so. Once again taking mercenary work for this guild.
Orion is a Paladin of Daues, he tries to the right the wrongs that have been done by others. Orion nods to what is said, "Sounds like a good plan. Don't think we have a ranger or druid amongst us to track them, will have to depend on them coming to us."
Nicolai says, "Frankly, I like the idea of setting a trap for these man-horses. Even if we could track them, there's no guarantee we can -catch- them? Especially in their own lands." He quickly checks the few pieces of gear he wears or carries. "Well, I'm ready to get started."
Smyhtly, the Goblin Paladin of Reos, arrives. You all know this because it's the first thing he said whne he arrives. "Hello! I'm Smyhtly! Warrior for the Forge of Creation! May it's warmth shelter us all. I am here to help!"
"Glad you could assist, Smythly," Cressida greets. "So, it sounds like we ought to just escort a tempting caravan, then strike back at the centaur hard. Do we have any tricks for keeping them from just escaping?"
Pavanna nods a bit at that and conisder SMyhtly for a moment. Well this city was full of all kinds. "Indeed, though are we looking to capture them? Surely a good show of force should discourage them enough into avoiding the caravanns coming through this area?"
Nicolai looks between Smythly and Orion a few times, hiding a grin. Mostly. "Well, I can already tell this is going to be a fun trip." He turns to Cressida and then seems to grow more thoughtful for a moment. "If they understand tradespeak," he finally replies, "We might be able to taunt them. Call their mothers donkeys or some such."
Orion thinks over Cressida question, "The Cleric could memorize spells that could hold them, I myself have a spell that could possibly bring one to me."
Lorien was there, listening. Either through the door, or quietly. Either way he slips through and beside the group, and remains quiet as he listens.
Nicolai holds up a hand in a 'slow down' motion when Orion mentions spells that hold people. "You don't mean me, do you? The Laughing One gives me spells to escape being captured, not to capture others." He thinks carefully. "Well, I suppose the first step is to find them. As for stopping them...I'm sure we'll come up with something."
Cressida looks to Nicolai with a slight smirk. "Is that an insult to them?" She smirks slightly. "Maybe we should ask them if their mother was the human or the horse? That's bound to piss them off, I'd imagine."
Orion looks over to Nicolai, "The laughing one does not give you spells for such, yet you might be doing such?" Orion simply shrugs. He then gives a light nod to Lucien when he notices him in the room.
The group finds some merchants that are traveling to small town a few days travel away. They have two wagons full of trade goods and head down the road with the group.

The group barely gets ten minutes out of town, in fact you can still see town not far in the distance, when they see some soldiers riding down the road towards them. However, Smythly and Lorien notice they are not riders, but centaurs in chainmail armor, carrying spears and swords.
Lorien calls towards the group when he says, "It looks like the centaurs," he says as he grunts a little and relaxes on his traversing with the group,. He shifts his weight a bit, and looks to actually see if anyone else confirms that.
"Wait a moment," says Smthly, "Maybe it's my height, but I'm not seeing any legs on them riders. What about you, fellows?" He's pulling out his dragonspitter, now. Just in case.
Nicolai blinks and then peers at what looks to him like normal riders. "If you say so," he says dubiously. Then he brightens. "But it looks like they're coming right for us. If it is the centaurs, then that was easier than I could have imagined it would be." He rolls his head to one side and then the other, easing the muscles in his neck. "I don't see any bows - but they could probably throw those spears if they wanted to."
Cressida looks away for a moment, casting a quick spell in preparation for what is likely to be a fight once they get closer. "Well, word was that they were getting cocky. I guess I expected there to be more than two of them, though." She starts to pull out her crossbow, in case combat starts at range.
Pavanna slows her mount as it trots along, her shortbow being drawn up in her arms. A good weapon for use on horseback. "Well that's rather...bold of them. We're still in sight of the city. And this looks a bit more organized then I was expecting as well if that's them..."
Orion readies his weapon, "Aggressive, we are barely out of the town and they are already trying to attack us. Sure hope it is not because they are being nice and did not want the travelers of the caravan to not have long to walk to for shelter."

Suddenly the centaurs start to spread out as the begin to gallop, then full out charge towards the group. They scream and yell as they come running in at full speed.

The centaur are really fast and push their advantage! Three of them throw their spears, one coming at Orion, one at Nicolia and one at Lorien, though they all miss. The one charging towards Orion gets a firm hit against him however.

Nicolai half-ducks, half-flinches as a spear is flung his way. "Learn to throw that thing!" he crows at any centaur in the direction the spear came from. He sombers when another centaur charges Orion. Nico clutches his holy symbol and begins moving in that direction. As he draws near a glowing short sword made of pure force appears above the cleric's shoulder...and then streaks off like an arrow the ten feet to the centaur.
The spears missed Orion but the charging Centaur is able to nick Orion with it attack. Orion tries to counter with a power attack of his greatsword only to swing and miss.

Lorien lifts up his Ray as he flicks it on with a switch. He then shoots a ball of charged fiery-red mana right at a centaur not far off which sears against a shoulder and the chainmail, as he switches to look at the others, "Doesn't look like they will retreat."
Cressida runs closer to the band of centaur as they do their best to overrun the group. Getting close to a pair that are close together, she's quick to encant some familiar words and let loose a blast of fire, leaving the centaurs with some serious burns.

Smyhtly, the little goblin that could, rushes up to one of the centaurs and bashes it's knee in with a horrific snap. His hammer slams into it and it collapses, more or less, breaking it's neck in the fall.
"Well," he says, "The bigger they are..."

Two centaur come charging in from the sides as they draw their swords and start slashing but they miss Lorien and Pavanna. The other one slices Orion with his sword before rearing up on his back legs and trying to kick Orion in the face with his hooves but misses.

Orion lays upon hands himself healing up some of the damage done to him. He has no need to do anything fancy to finish off the Centaur that charged him due to the others hurting it. A simple swing with his greatsword kills the Centaur.

One of the centaurs charges forward towards Orion and swings his sword but misses.

Nicolai sees Orion finish off the centaur he had attacked. The mystic sword briefly hovers idly over Nico's head, but he flicks a finger towards one of the other centaurs, sailing across the space to poke into it. Nicolai has by this time turned away, inching closer to another centaur and swinging his glaive. He's unable to penetrate this horse-man's armor.

Lorien takes off with a clean rush forward and dodges as two weapons are raised to slam against him. He ducks one then sidles away from the other in a dodge, before he comes about with his weapon and shoots a charged mana shot of flame clean into the centaur he is aiming at which sears clean through the armor, "Come on, let's really see if you can take me."

Cressida takes a moment to survey the field. The two centaur she bruned dropped, but the remainder seem to be doing a good job of swarming over them at the moment. She spots one that is slightly more distant from her companions and lets loose a ray of fire, striking it's horse torso and scorching it badly.

Cressida calls out, "Look out, Lorien! They're surrounding you!"

This time around, Smythly isn't having much luck with the hammer. He engages the other centaur to try to keep it from moving on unassailed but it's able to keep it's legs out of the hammer's swing.
Pavanna moves and misses, not used to fighting an opponent that is actually part of the horse instead of simply on horseback.

The centaurs keep up their attack, swinging their swords and kicking people in front of them. Most of them are missing but one gets a hit with his sword on Pavanna, then follows up with a kick to the head. Another kicks Lorien in the back.

Nicolai winces as Pavanna is hit. He's so close that he can actually hear the blows landing. Nico begins to move that way, sending his force sword to attack another centaur on 'their' side of the battle. When he's close enough he puts a hand on Pavanna's shoulder. He murmurs under his breath for the healing power of laughter, and sure enough the warrior's injuries are healed.

Orion wants to take on the Centaur he believes is the least hurt. He avoids the attack of another Centaur to get to it. Upon reaching the Centaur he points his greatsword at then yells, "You!" Aided by his god Orion slams his greatsword hard into the Centaur.

Lorien takes a few clean strikes from the hoofs and perhaps a slash that comes his way while he ducks and weaves through the others. Still he takes a beating enough that he looks a little raggedy. He lifts up his weapon, and then points it at the centaur's chest. A mana-charged bolt of red slams clean into his chest and comes out the other side as it falls on its side. "Well, that solves that," he says, and winces a little, as he shifts on his hip and tries to wipe a little blood away.

Some of the centaur start to go down but they continue to swing their swords and their hooves pack a surprising amount of force. One gets a small knick on Smythly with his sword, then follows it up with a solid kick.

Cressida keeps her central location in the battle, looking to either side of her, her companions split to fight on two fronts. She turns and points to the centaur being fought away from its companions, incanting quickly and letting loose another fiery ray. It strikes the centaur solidly in the chest, searing him severely and leavin ghim to collapse to the ground.
Smyhtly is still locked in battle with the centaru he's been distracting. He's taken a kick or two, but he seems to've been largely protected by the armor he's wearing. Still, those hovoes are quite dangerous to someone his size. He hooks the haoft of the hammre around one leg, but it slips free and he ducks again.

The centaur tries to slice at Pavanna while it kicks it feet at Nicolai who is trying to heal people. One of his kicks get a good solid hit.

Orion charges in trying to attack the Centaur that is attacking Nicolai and Pavanna. He points his greatsword at the Centaur then yells to it, "You too!" However when he tries to hit the Centaur with his greatsword he misses.

Nicolai clutches his holy again, features set in conversation. A wave of healing energy radiates from Nicolai, washing over everyone on the battlefield with the notable exception of the two remaining centaurs. Along with the soothing sensation, everyone who is infused with the healing energies also senses in the distance...the yipping of a coyote?

Lorien takes off and stream-lines as the healing washes him. The youth makes his way and then swivels so he can take a clean hit to strike the centaur and sear into its skin with the mana-charged ball of flame.

The centaur shifts slightly, knowing the goblin is hard to kick, so instead he rears up and tries to kick at Lorien's face, while at the same time swiping his sword at Smythly.

Cressida starts to move into a better position, keeping her buckler ready for defense as she gets closer to the remaining centaur. She casts her spell to fire another sizzling ray at the centau she's closer to, but running is throwing off her aim and it goes high and over the centaur's head.
Smyhtly moves, envetually helping to apply additional pressure in surrounding the remaining raiding centaur. "Surrender or lose your life! You'll give us no choice!" Another bad hammer blow. He's not doing great.

The centaur shifts sliftly to fight with his friend and defend him a little better. He doesn't have much of a chance of hitting Orion so goes all out on Lorien!

The Centaur Orion is attacking looks pretty hurt. Orion goes for a basic attack to finish this Centaur off, aided by his god, when Orion's greatsword strikes the creature it kills it.
Lorien lifts up his weapon and points it point blank towards the centaur, "Give up, we have you surrounded, I don't wish for needless bloodshed, and someone needs to answer for these crimes, or we'll take it to the next level and you'll meet your god of choice," he says. Normally it'd be convincing but he figures it might not heed it. He does aside, "At least /try/ and take him alive? I'm tired of the needless killing."

The centaur laughs as he looks to Lorien and starts to kick at him, "I will show you needless killing you fool!" He then hacks his sword into him.

Cressida continues moving, getting into position so she can let loose waves of fire without injuring her team mates. She turns and gives a quick incantation, gesturing and letting loose a wave of fire, burning over the horse-part of the centaur and leaving him severely wounded.

Centaurs being slain to the left and right of her, Pavanna rushes forward at the last upwardly mobile member of the raiders and slashes at him with her longsword, using the momentum of her movement to bring down the horseman.
Lorien takes his Ray and places it as his hip, and then he gets right to assisting the centaur, "We should stabalize them and then have them rounded up for delivery to the City Guard," he says, as he grabs a few bandages.

Orion lets out a long breath, "Well that took a while, but looks like everyone is alright and this should mark the end of the centaurs raids, we did good work today."
Cressida chuckles softly, looking over to the city, still within view. "Well, at least the City Guard isn't far away. I guess these guys were just getting a little too cocky. We were clearly more than they could handle."
"Yes. Let us turn these centaurs over. Perhaps justice can be found, as well as why they've been attacking," Smythly nods, seeming relieved.
Two of the centaur are taken back to the city guard and thrown in jail. With the centaur problem over with the groups receive their bounty and trade is once again safe in the area.
