PrP: Strange Creatures

  • Title: Strange creatures

  • Summary: Some strange creatures have been seen in the area and it turns out they are giant frilled lizards!

Recently there has been all sort of reports of strange creatures wandering around in the wilderness just outside of town. So a few people got together and sent word for some adventurers to come and try to get rid of the creatures.

"I hope this isn't another hunt for a boy and his squrrel," says Smthly upon his arrival. Just that. He seems rather irritated about that. "A missing flute," he mutters.

Duncan walks out of the town gates leading his Digger. His axe is in one hand, held slightly choked up so that it's easier to manage the massive weapon with equally massive weight. When he gets to the edge of the wilderness he stops and looks around. "As long as it gives us a good fight," he replies evenly.

Orion walks outside the gates, his longsword is in it scabbard his metal shield on his back, his greatsword is in his hands. He gives a nod to the others that are also looking for the creature as well.

Just then there is a scream as some people come running by, "Ahh there are a bunch of dragons attacking!" They don't stop to talk though, and all keep running back towards town.

Cressida approaches the group alongside Orion, buckler on her arm and a few things hanging from her belt, crossbow over her shoulder. "So, we're off lookingfor strange creatures, are well. I wonder what it is that's causing all this ruckus. Should be exciting to find out."

Duncan looks like he's going to ask something, but they're already past and still running. He grunts out a curse in Khazdul and then clambers onto the Digger's back, taking up a long spear in one hand and a much shorter spear with the other. "Dragons? It can't be!" He murmurs something to the Digger and it begins trudging in the direction the people came from.

"Bunch of dragons?" says Smyhtly, eyes widening. "That doesn't sound right. If it was a /bunch/ of dragons, I don't think anybody'd be surviving to tell us." But still ,he's on his way.

Cressida looks in the direction people are running from. "That doesn't sound right, but it could be a lot of things. Come on, let's check it out, fast." She's quick to follow the group as they head towards the supposed dragons.

Orion nods in agreement with Duncan and Smyhtly "Some type of draconic offshot, probably, but dragons I doubt that as well. If they are intelligent perhaps I can talk to them, see what they want." Orion runs with the rest of the group.

The group heads through a lightly wooded area and up a large hill. As you get to the top you look down and spot three large, brightly colored lizard. They are next to a horse, that they killed and are now eating.

Duncan can't help but shoot a quick look at Orion, then turns his attention back to the lizards. "Any reason not to chop these things to bits?" he calls out as he shifts his grip on the longer spear, lowering it so that he's holding it in the middle and over one shoulder.

"Yes there is." Orion says to Duncan, "They are just some how far from home. Lets take them down but try to leave alive. If they are not evil, which I shall find out."

"Whatever is going on," Cressida notes. "They are a menace. If they aren't evil, they may still be wild animals. They don't look like dragons, but I can see the confusion."

"What in the world?" says Smthly. They're lizards, but they don't have wings and aren't breathing fire. "Those aren't dragons," he shrills, dissapointed.

GAME: Orion rolls nature: (17)+nature: 17

Duncan nods thoughtfully, then climbs off of the Digger's back again, exchanging his spears for his axe again. "I can try to work my way around that side, so that if they try to run they won't get away..."

Orion nods to Duncan, "I guess I will take them head on when you are in position."

Cressida nods. "Yeah, go for it. We don't wnat them just scattering and causing problems again later."

The lizards start to notice people moving around them, surrounding them. They start to hiss loudly as they look round. Then one of them suddenly stands up on it's hind legs and and a large frill opens along it's neck, making the creature look really massive as it hisses and charges straight towards Orion! It tries to follow up it's terrifying charge with a bite but misses.

<OOC> Alice says, "okay, Orion isn't scared since he is a paladin and they are immune to fear type effects."

Duncan is almost in position when the Lizards notice the party. Duncan rushes to get to the nearest lizard, but spots another creature on the other side of the small pack already charging at Orion. He bellows at the Digger to 'charge the other' while Duncan himself slams his axe into the lead lizard's side, his last few footfalls pounding into the earth with the resounding noise of a much larger creature. His Digger hesitates only a moment before barelling into the remaining lizard from the other side.

Smyhtly sees a lizard. Die, lizard, die! He runs over to it and /smashes/ it with his hammer. Of course, he's tiny and the hammer is tiny comparatively, but it still seems to land a solid impact!

The lizards hiss loudly as their frills spread out and their tails whip around like crazy as they make strange sounds and move about. One of them lunges forward and takes a big bite out of Duncan.

Cressida was a little slow to react, but the lizards have charged forward and seem to have found their opponents. Since Smythly and Orion are fighting one together, she moves forward to assist Duncan and his pet with the others. As she moves, she incants a quick spell, firing off a ray of fire at the lizard behind her, but her aim is off and she only manages to scorch the ground.

Orion is able to avoid the charging lizard however when he tries to counter attack with his greatsword he misses.

The lizard drops back down onto all four legs as it hisses and dodges under Orions attack, then lunges forward and bites into him.

Duncan's hide armor, even enchanted, proves unable to ward off the bit of the lizard he's facing. His Digger has no such concerns, shrugging off blows without even seeming to noticing. Both Khazad and Khazad Digger continue to fight their enemies. Duncan employs his magic Waraxe to great affect. The Stonebeast just opens it's huge maw and bites savagely. "Keep at it 'Nox!" Duncan calls out encouragingly. "Good boy!"

SMthly delivers another hit to the lizard he's facing off with with Orion, adjusting his position, "let's try to surround it," he calls to Iron.

The lizard's keep hissing and squirming around as their frills blow around in the wind and their tails slap through the air. Another bites duncan, then the other one, thinking the thing in front of it is just a big rock decides to stand up on its hind two legs and charges towards Duncan and bites him as well.

GAME: Cressida casts Burning Hands. Caster Level: 4 DC: 17

Cressida moves around the impressive digger, getting up alongside him as she starts to chant. Raising her hands up as she gets into position, she lets loose a blast of fire. Both of the lizards on Duncan are caught offguard, getting quite burned.

After getting bit Orion decides to do nothing fancing just heal himself, move to put Smythly in a better position and do a simple attack on the lizard.

The lizard backs up a little as she continues to try and bite Orion, while whipping its tail around at him but he keeps dodging.

GAME: Duncan RAGES!, gaining: +4 Str, +4 Con, +2 Will and -2 AC

"Aw, damn it. Stop moving, you lizard thing," Smythly tells the lizard. His hammer connects only with the ground.

The lizards hiss loudly and look like they are about to go down, but they seem to move even faster as they dodge Duncan's and his pets attack, then one suddenly lunges towards Cressida and takes a bit bite out of her.

GAME: Cressida casts Scorching Ray. Caster Level: 4 DC: 18

GAME: Cressida rolls ranged-4: (17)+4+-4: 17

GAME: Cressida rolls 4d6+4: (11)+4: 15

GAME: Orion rolls weapon5-2: (5)+8+-2: 11

Cressida lets out a yelp as she's bitten, jumping back from the creature and hiding behind her buckler as best she can. With a quick incantation she points at the lizard and hits it solidly with a fiery ray. The beast lets out a howl and collapses to the ground.

Orion now tries to attack the giant lizard with a power attack from his greatsword but the lizard is too agile for Orion causing Orion to miss.

The lizard lunges forward again and bites Orion again, sinking it's sharp teeth into him. All the while his tail continues to flail around and seems pretty useless.

With Cressida finishing off one of the lizards, Duncan and his Stonebeast now have the other one pinned between them. The Digger snaps at it, and just as the lizard hops back to avoid the bite Duncan brings his waraxe slashing forward into the creature's back, dropping it as well.

With the two lizards by her now incapacitated, Cressida turns her attention on the one remaining. She starts to incant as she points in its direction, trying to get a decent shot, but the way it's jumping around and fighting Smythly and Orion makes it too difficult to target and the ray flies over it, missing completely.

Orion gets biten by the giant lizard once again but this time he is able to counter attack slaming his greatsword hard against the lizard.

SMthyly delivered another lizard-smashing blow earlier! He's getting ready to do it again, and looking quite pleased with himself. This is much better than the centaurs, darn it!

The lizard stands back up on two legs and snaps at Orion, but when he is focusing on his mouth this long tail comes sweeping around from behind him and hits him hard in the side.

Smythly brings his hammer down one more time, smashing it into the lizard's skull an d dropping it with a solid hit. He seems smugly pleased with himself. Not over the killing, of course, but rather with his performance.

Duncan looks over at the last lizard, lips pulled back in a rictus snarl. Even in his enraged state he knows he can't make it over to the last creature...but in the fog of Duncan's brain he knows how to strike from a distance. He digs his longbow out of his pack and sends an arrow sailing across the field - where misses the lizard completely. Duncan's practically foaming at the mouth now, but then Smithy manages to knock the creature senseless.

Orion can see that the lizard he was figthing with Smythly is down but not dead, he now goes over to the other two giant lizards to try and stabilize them.

Duncan watches Orion move over to the fallen lizards, then holds up a hand in a 'wait' gesture. He whistles for the digger, then has the massive creature sit on the lizard Orion is about to treat. "Just in case," he grins.

"So what exactly /are/ these things?" asks Smythly curiously. He looks back and forth.

Cressida lets out a relieved sigh as the last lizard drops. Something about them was just difficult for her to target properly. "Some kind of lizard, I guess. Seems like they're carnivorous. If they're alive, we could bring them to the Arcanists, maybe. Or the druids. They don't look magical."

Duncan puts away his bow and then goes to find the arrow he sent flying off into the woods. Waste not want not. "I've never seen anything like this before," he remarks to Smythly as he returns. "Reminds me of some of the Sith Empress' retinue though."

Orion shakes his head to Duncan, "I know what I am doing they will not be in a condition to be able to fight. No need for your mount to sssit on them." Orion's long forked tongue extends just a bit more then usual when he says sit. He then clears his throat and concentrates on healing the lizards using his lays upon hand to stabilize them.

The lizards are each the size of the horse and are pretty heavy but eventually you can get them back to town, where a druid will tell you that they are just normal lizards. Giant frilled lizards to be exact. Though they are usually native to tropical areas. He has no idea how they got here but suspects that someone might of taken them as pets when they were smaller but they kept growing and growing, and the person probably just released them into the wild when they were too much of a pain to feed.

Orion shakes his hand, "Not insulting but they are not exactly a rare gift either. Think of it like offering a fisherman a pet fish, nice thought but it is something he see every day. I will take them to the Am'shere, they will not cause trouble there."

"...frilled lizards. Who the hell has ever heard of a 'frilled lizard?" mutters Smythly all the way about.
