- Title: Dark of the Moon
- Emitter: Tiasa
- Characters: Rakim (5), Taidan (4), Dain (2), Richter (2)
- Place: Village outside Alexandria near swampland
- Time: Aug 13, 2015
- Summary: Village attacked by something when no moon is in the sky, ask for help.
- APL: 3
- Encounter 1: 2 (young) Chaos Drakes (CR 3) CR 5 total
Word was sent out by a village not far from Alexandria. This particular village lies not too far from a swamp, and it seems they have been having trouble lately. During the days that the moon is absent from the sky their village is raided and they lose livestock. They are mostly farmers and ranchers, none of them really that good at tracking so they aren't able to hunt down the ones responsible. All they know is there are large tracks that lead into the swamp. You arrive at the village a few hours before dusk. A village elder comes out to meet you. "Thank you all for coming. If you can put an end to the problem we will be most appreciative." he states.
Rakim offers a rather theatrical bow to the elder. Arising with a smile he adjusts his plumed hat so it sits just so and nods "My pleasure to help good sir" he drawls in a rather languid tone with a curiously mixed accent "Rakim, humble servant of Eluna at your service"
Richter is there, nodding affably. "Well, thanks for asking us here."
Dain walks with his horse, taking long drags from the pipe that sticks out amongst his dreadlocked beard, holding them for a moment before letting the acrid smoke go. By his side is a tiger that's the size of a large dog, wearing leather barding.
Taidan follows the rest of the trouble-shooting team into the beleaguered village and offers the spokesman a closed-lip grin and a nod. "Whatever we can do to help, we're here for you."
"And hopefully most of us can contribute more than falling into a spineless heap this evening" Rakim stage whispers into a gloved hand with a look of artful innocence on his delicate face. With that he produces his rather ornate mechanical repeating crossbow and presses the button that flicks the arms and lever out. Cranking the lever down "So good sir" he drawls to the elder "...would you prefer that we follow the tracks, or stay and guard?" he inquires whilst shouldering the bow.
The elder smiles, "No thank you, so the pens are what they have been raiding, we have started to keep the livestock elsewhere." he leads the way towards the pens. "No matter what we do they always get in, its like the fences just are gone." They reach a pen where it looks like livestock are, one section of the fencing is gone, though there are some remains. The elder looks at them, "If you can hunt down what is doing it, all the better, cause they don't always come, though there is no moon again tonight so they might come."
<OOC> Rakim says, "When it is my turn I will examine the general area for clues and tracks :)" <OOC> Tiasa says, "Perception, and knowledge/nature checks." GAME: Taidan rolls knowledge/local: (12)+10: 22 <OOC> Taidan says, "And to know the village a little bit better." GAME: Richter rolls perception: (18)+6: 24 You paged Rakim with 'you find the tracks. they look bigger than wolf and more...lizard like, not sure what they are, but might be small drakes or something.' You paged (Richter, Rakim) with 'in addition to the tracks the fence rails and posts look like they sort of melted away.' <OOC> Taidan says, "I forget. All my intelligence based rolls have a +1 due to my transmutation specialist attribute enhancement ability (yes, that is a mouth full)." GAME: Dain rolls perception: (17)+9: 26 You paged Taidan with 'the village elder is well respected and the village is known for its sheep and charcoal' To (Tiasa, Richter), Rakim pages: Wooden? and Melted or burned? GAME: Dain rolls knowledge/nature: (19)+7: 26 You paged (Dain, Richter, Rakim) with 'the fences were wooden and they look melted.'
Richter squints at the fence rails. "That," he umms, "really doesn't look good." Pointing at the fence rails with an arrow used as a poker, he gestures, "The wood melted? Doesn't make sense, but there it is."
You paged (Dain, Rakim) with 'the tracks are maybe small drakes or something similar to it.' You paged Dain with 'putting everything together looks like acid from a drake might be the culprit for the fences.'
Taidan arches a brow at the remark made by Richter. "Wood melted? Are you sure?" He already makes his way towards where Richter is located, curious as to see if the phenomenon is true or not.
From afar, Taidan will cast detect magic to see if there are traces of magic on the wood. GAME: Taidan casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14
Dain puffs lightly, drawing out his pipe and pointing to the fences then the tracks then back.. "Acid drakes?" he suggests, "With wood melting acid, I -think-" The dwarf hazards.
You paged Taidan with 'no magic.'
Rakim squats down by the tracks in silence as he follows them a few steps, using his gloved hands for rough measurements "Well..." he drawls whilst dusting his hands off "...not undead, nor hellhounds. More like lizards" he muses then examines the wood carefully "At a rough guess, considering size and the pens, drakes of some kind. Probably emitting some form of acid, which considering the rather more arboreal setting would make some degree of sense" he adds with an agreeable nod to the dwarf.
Taidan twiddles his fingers in the direction of the 'melted wood' and says a few arcane words before his eyes shimmer for a few seconds. "Hmmm." He says to no one in particular. "Interesting. I don't believe it is magical. But interesting nevertheless."
There is a slight cursing, "Black drakes. They can be bad, hard to reason with doing what they want, probably out of the swamp." The elder says and shakes his head, "We would be grateful if you could keep them from coming back." he gives a bit of a bow and then moves off, a bit shaken. Taidan ponders this over, "I normally go about and kill the offending creature as that is a simple way of solving the problem. Would you like us to take care of them in a way that doesn't kill them?" He says to the spokesperson/elder.
Dain pages: Do drakes count as animals for speak with animals spells?
Richter winces, nods. He swings his bow around, and checks the fletchings of his arrows. "Black drakes. Great." He winces. "Well."
You paged Dain with 'do dragons? they are dragon type'
THe elder turns before going inside, "However you have to." he says and then goes inside, leaving you all around the pen, alone.
Rakim casts a look at Taiden "Not another Kira" he mutters then curses softly in some archaic language. Bringing his bow back down and level he looks around the others "No point wasting more of the evening, let us be on our way" he suggests then starts carefully down the path of tracks, being as quiet as he may whilst watching out for surprises.
<OOC> Tiasa says, "survival"
Taidan nods his head to the elder, "Okay. But before I leave, you seem familar with this black drakes. I am not. What can you tell us about it? And where can we find its lair?"
GAME: Dain rolls survival: (4)+10: 14 GAME: Richter rolls survival: (9)+3: 12 <OOC> Taidan was hoping Elder dude knows the way. GAME: Taidan rolls survival: (18)+4: 22
Richter gets into a crouch, keeps his bow out, and follows Rakim. "Let's just do what needs to be done."
GAME: Rakim rolls survival+2: (5)+12+2: 19
You are able to follow the tracks to the edge of the swamp. The swamp itself doesn't look to be the most inviting of places.
<OOC> Taidan says, "The elder blew me off. How rude." <OOC> Tiasa says, "he was gone before you last question." GAME: Taidan refreshes spells. <OOC> Tiasa says, "so you are at the edge of the swamp." <OOC> Taidan shrugs, "Might as well get this over with."
"One day one of these things will take me somewhere salubrious" Rakim laments with a somewhat theatrical hand to his forehead. Looking back to the rest of the group with something of a wry smile "Who is volunteering to go first that is not myself"
Dain gets out his shield, though his warhammer stays at his side. He decides to leave the large horse behind so his free hand is in charge of his pipe. Looking about, he puffs quietly, clearly not volunteering.
Taidan draws out his scimitar and buckler as they get near to the place that the monster calls home. Looking at the large swampy area, he shakes his head. He shakes his head even more vehemently when Rakim suggests a volunteer to bait the creature out. "No thanks. I like to keep my innards inside me."
<OOC> Rakim says, "Richter?" <OOC> Richter says, "Fine." <OOC> Richter can, just isn't a good choice yet ;) <OOC> Rakim was just waiting on a pose <OOC> Richter nods. I'd figured the past one was holding up, but I was wrong :) <OOC> Rakim says, "Feel free to do what your char would just, just pose" <OOC> Taidan was still hoping for drawing lots, but Richter can do it.
The sun is just starting to set, and the land starts to get darker. Richter cracks his head from side to side, and shrugs. "I can, if nobody's gunna volunteer."
<OOC> Taidan says, "Casting dancing lights." GAME: Taidan casts Dancing Lights. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 <OOC> Tiasa says, "pose it...then perception checks everyone"
Richter hisses. "Keep those behind me, please. They're going to mess with my night vision."
GAME: Richter rolls perception: (2)+6: 8
"Yes, I have noticed this in the past. Rest assured sir I was not in any way expecting you to volunteer" Rakim replies to Taidan, his usual drawling tone a little more scornful than usual. Shaking his head he looks at the sun going down "Very well then, lets be about before it gets too late" he says as he steps into the muck with a look of distaste.
Taidan notices that at this particular area of the woods, the sun sets a bit earlier than usual. Or that it gets darker quicker. He decides that it is a good time to cast some illumination into their area and conjures up a few glowing orbs to light up their way.
GAME: Dain rolls perception: (15)+9: 24 GAME: Taidan rolls perception: (6)+0: 6 GAME: Dain rolls 6: (20)+6: 26 <OOC> Dain says, "For Thrud the tiger" GAME: Rakim rolls perception: (9)+14: 23 GAME: Tiasa rolls 1d20+10: (17)+10: 27 GAME: Tiasa rolls 1d20+10: (17)+10: 27 GAME: Tiasa rolls 1d20+8: (2)+8: 10 GAME: Tiasa rolls 1d20+8: (17)+8: 25
You paged (Dain, Rakim) with 'you two hear something coming out of the swamp, though as you hear it, it starts moving faster, obviously it has heard you too.'
Taidan looks at Rakim with a 'not-amused' expression on his face. "Keep rubbing in on my face, girly-boy." He shakes shis head and moves off to hide behind a tree, but keeping watch of what is going on ahead.
"So says the cowar..." Rakim pauses and cocks his head to one side "Something is on it's way.." he pauses as he tilts his head again "It has accelerated. I suspect it has sensed us" he says pausing to prayer to Eluna a moment before finding cover and aiming his bow towards the approaching sounds.
GAME: Rakim casts Bless. Caster Level: 5 DC: 15 Dain pages: Casting entangle? You paged Dain with 'where?' <OOC> Taidan casts mirror image. GAME: Taidan attempts to cast Mirror Image but fails due to ASF. <OOC> Taidan says, "Darn it." Dain pages: Towards the sounds, going to try to stall them in our firing range You paged Dain with 'cast and pose it'
Taidan begins to encant the spell that would cause multiple images of himself. The images appear, but hey look like dried empty husks that soon enough disentigrates. "Great. Just great."
GAME: Dain casts Entangle. Caster Level: 2 DC: 15
Dain reacts, his hand dropping his pipe as it brushes a sprig of holly in his beard and muttering something indecipherable he motions towards a place where he hears sounds coming at them, the roots and branches coming alive to grasp and grab.
Richter scuttles towards cover, looking around. He hisses: "Where?"

There is a large roar as a good sized black drake, looking almost like a small wingless dragon emerges out of the swamp and comes at you all. Not as big as some might be expecting but still Large. It gets stuck in the entanglement though.

Rakim seems entirely calm in the face of charging drakes, although armed with a missile weapon he does stay behind cover. He folds one side of his hat up so as to better take aim then murmers a prayer to Eluna. The loaded bolt starts to glow a silvery light that streaks out through the darkening swamp and sinks deeply into the drake. He levers down another bolt in a smooth and practiced motion, without shifting his aim.
Another one, almost identical to the first comes out of the swamp and it too gets stuck, next to its sibling.

The other drake gets free and crosses the area of entanglement, ending up at the edge of it.
"Silver lady grant me thy eyes" prays Rakim softly. The moonlight glow from his bolt is reflected in his eyes as it seems his patron grants him his prayer. He takes in a breath and as he exhales he squeezes the trigger, the silvery glowing bolt flying true to slam into the creature again, but it still seems up.
<OOC> Richter will draw his swords, and move to intercept the drake, getting into a place to set up a flank with the tiger. Single attack! GAME: Richter rolls 1d20+5+1: (8)+5+1: 14 <OOC> Tiasa says, "miss" GAME: Tiasa advances the initiative order.

Richter drops his bow, and races across the swamp to meet the drake, swords coming out. He circles a bit, so that he's on the opposite side of the drake to the tiger. All great thinking, but he can't get his measure right and swipes air.

Taidan looks past the tree on where he is hiding behind and frowns when Richter and his pet engages one of the beasts. "Be careful out there, dude. That monster looks mean." He then begins the process of increasing his size and weight, magically becoming a giant. "Just hold on." His voice gradually becoming more basso in tone. "Help is on the way."

Round Three - Init 11. It is now Richter's turn! Taidan is next!
Rakim's faintly cold eyes take in the swampy field as he ratchets down the third bolt with swoft and practiced motions. The closer one seems well occupied so he keeps his aim on the wounded one "Silver lady, lend me your grace" he prays quietly then squeezes the trigger. For a third time the glowing bolt finds home in the creature, and this time the drake splashes down into the swampy water. No obvious gestures of triumph, he simple cranks down another bolt and shifts aim.

Taidan assess the situation and notices that the number of conjured creatures is diminishing. It is matter of 'when' and not 'if' before real blood is drawn. Forced into a position that he is not ready to commit, he decides that he should act now while the number of allies are still good. He breaks out from behind the tree he is hiding from, or attempt to be hiding from considering that there are six large sized Taidans in there, and makes his way towards the drake. He shifts his scimitar to his other hand and extends out his hand to touch the creature, saying words of arcane origin as he does so. His hands suddenly have electrical discharges coursing through his extended hand, the focus on solidifying at the palm of his hand. With a touch that barely manages to connect, the electrical energy is discharged. "Look girly-boy! I am in melee! Happy now?!"
The Tiger strikes back, glowing teeth and sharp claws flailing at the beast, tearing into it's flesh as Dain takes up a position and slams his hammer hard into the beast's side. The deep thock of a rib possibly breaking greating the hammer as Dain holds up his shield ready for the beast's own flailing retaliation.
Rakim rolls his eyes at Taidan, but does not reply to the other man. Rather he lets his crossbow do the talking. A murmered prayer, a breath and then a squeeze of the trigger. The glowing bolt streaks out to CRUNCH into the drake's skull, burying itself deep and sending it into the muddy water. Arising from his firing position he calmly reloads, pulling bolts from within one of his seemingly infinite pockets. Not saying a word even as it clicks full.
<OOC> Tiasa says, "free posing"
Richter steps back, with a wince and a curse, looking at the holes in his shoulder. "Fuck." A glance towards Rakim: "Thank you."
Dain puts away his hammer and moves over to Thrud, looking over her wounds carefully, nodding slowly. Looking around, he says, "We may want to check for a clutch.. it would be.. bad if we left it and even more of them troubled the village later...
Rakim tips his hat to Richter with a bright smile brightening his delicate but scarred face "A pleasure good sir. And well done all" he says with polite nods to the others around "I can offer some healing if needed?" he offers whilst tucking the bow away.
Richter looks down at the drake, considering. He flexes his arm. "Ouch." He nods to Dain. "That's a good idea."
Taidan begins chopping the heads of the drakes and puts them in sacks. "I guess there is nothing more for us to do here except take back these heads and show it to the villagers."
Rakim nods to Dain with a brief smile "Far be it for me to dispute the words of those I can only presume are a druid" he replies then pulling out his bow again he follows the tracks to see if there is a nest.
You do find way back to the nest and remains of sheep. It apparently was just the pair of them.
It appears they were young drakes on their own and just attacking the village because of its closeness to their nest and easy food. The villages give you thanks and the reward.
