Rumors abound of a forest not too far from Alexandria, a day at the moment. The nearby villages are all afraid of it, hearing strange noises and some people have gone missing. They contacted Alexandria who in turn put out a request for someone to go and investigate. That someone is you. You have travelled most of the day and the edges of the forest are now within sight. There is a gloom that seems to hang over the Forest.

Lothos used a magical mount to get this far, dismissing it when they arrive. "Well, another wonderful day out in nature, and waiting for nature to try to kill us." He takes a sip from a waterskin, then begins to speak a quick spell for protection.

<OOC> Lothos says, "Casting mage armor" GAME: Lothos casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 10 DC: 18 <OOC> Autumn says, "Just trying to figure out what to prep in two of my slots. I've been experimenting with leaving a 1st and 2nd level slot open for the prep based on situation thingie. :)"

"Just have to be more clever than nature," Kojot points out, taking the sheaths off of his fingerblades. "And more deadly, too."

The lands outside the city are patrolled by those who claim them. Those that the Dire claims extend even further beyond those. Randomly appearing towers, undead aboiminations... they can require much care to keep clean. Now word of darkness, fear, and death reaches her ears concerning this particular area. A day's travel is merely a delay.

Selia has little fondness for horses, but even less for walking. The little dancer frowns at the gloom, idly adjusting the numerous pouches upon her person. "Jus 'ope dis ain't nuthin like da gloom in Dragioner. Be a real kick in da teeth." Her regular accent drips with Low Charnish.

Autumn quietly rides into town on a black horse, riding over at a walk to the others who have gathered.

The forest itself looks like it is slowly dying, the trees turning grey and some are rotting. There is an obvious path into the forest in front of you.

Lothos looks around a bit, studying the trees and then giving a sigh. "Why do I suddenly have a feeling like necromancy or something similar is involved here. Undead always smell bad...well, skeletons smell ok most times."

Autumn dismounts, dispelling the look of the Reaper being present. She ties off the horse to a hitching post and looks around at the others. She clears her throat and says to the adventurers gathered "Good evening, I am Autumn. Before we continue, perhaps introductions are in order. I am a Sage and trained in the Arcane Arts. I would like to know the skills of those I will be traveling with, to best advise and perhaps enhance with my knowledge and talents.

Selia quirks a brow, but nods to Autumn. "Selia Shadowkin, I'ma dancer and a sneaker. Iffen needs stabbed 'tween da ribs, I'm yer gal."

The growing bleakness and corruption of the living Ea draws the white Dire Wolf from the scraggly underbrush. It also draws a menacing, unhappy growl from her. The words of possible undead does not imrpove anything in any form. She scents the air before lowering her nose to the ground.

"Introductions, eh? Sounds reasonable," shrugs Kojot. "Kojot Wydmy, fighter of the desert-wolf style." He pounds a fist against the chest of his fullplate, his fingerblades glowing sand-yellow. "Give me a target and I'll shred them."

Lothos smiles "I'm just Lothos, generally weird person, magicky type stuff."

Kojot looks around, checking the ground while Dire Wolf sniffs around. "Huh -- looks like scorched hoofprints," he notes, pointing to the trail. "Freshest ones lead into the forest."

Dire Wolf inhales deeply, then sneezes. Another growl, now intelligible. "Sulfur. Horses or riders are not natural."

Lothos looks at the tracks that are pointed out, furrowing his brow a moment. "I'd say something summoned, from one of the hells perhaps. Nightmare maybe."

Selia eyes the large predator cautiously, and peers around the gloom of the woods. "Don't reckon gonna come out ta say 'ello. Wotever's 'appenin, reckon we'll find it further in."

<OOC> Corra says, "feel free to pose and discuss on channel a moment, I have to step afk, I will pose when I get back and you can go from there. should only be moment or two" <OOC> Lothos says, "I have to drive home. I'll be back online in about 10 minutes tops"

Kojot nods. "Might give us a better idea of what's happening to the forest, as well," he notes.

<OOC> Corra says, "ready to move into forest?"

Autumn says "I'll need a few minutes to prepare." She retires to a quiet spot and pulls out a thick book, reading through the pages.

Dire Wolf pans her muzzle to Selia. "It would be easier if they came to us, but the source must be stopped or it will continue to fester." She turns up the path, but no longer inhales deeply of the tainted earth. The stench won't clear easily from her nose.

It is noticable right off that there are no animal sounds it is deathly silent in the forest. This is noticable as soon as you enter. The path is wide enough for two side by side. It looms and awaits you.

Selia eyes for a few moments an mutters quietly. "I'll be close. Iffen I need ya, I'll hollar." Moving towards the underbrush, the ShadowDancer moves into the shadows not unlike a frog moving into water. <Hide in Plain Sight>

Kojot takes the lead of the main group. "Be wary; who knows if they have an ambush ready or not," he warns as he looks around cautiously.

Lothos follows towards the rear of the party, sure, he could be ambushed there too, but not much you can do in a group this size.

GAME: Autumn casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 6 DC: 17 <OOC> Corra says, "so order?" <OOC> Autumn says, "Middle. :)" <OOC> Selia says, "Middle-ish/front." <OOC> Autumn promptly steps on Selia, since she can't see her. <OOC> Dire Wolf has no problems with foreward. <OOC> Kojot says, "I'm at the front of the main group." <OOC> Autumn says, "Someone should take rear guard, just in case." <OOC> Lothos says, "I'm in the rear, I'm just not a great meatshield" <OOC> Dire Wolf can if need be, as she takes up the entire path.

The progress through the forest is quiet. Nothing jumps out at you though you see signs of decay every where. Ahead. Those in front can see a clearing with a strange light coming from it.

Lothos takes rear guard, mostly that means turning around to look behind them very often, while the others are looking ahead. When they slow and spot the light at the clearing, he grimaces and shakes his head. "These things are never good."

"Did you expect despoilers to offer gifts and welcome?" The wolf snorts while attempting to look over the heads in front to better see what lies ahead. Kojot flexes his fingers. "Selia, think you can scout that without getting caught?" he murmurs. "I'd rather not do a blind rush if it can be helped."

Lothos shrugs, "Maybe its accidental? Like bad body oder and he doesnt realize it, but he is really nice and friendly?"

Selia mmms softly. "Can try. Worse ta worse, make a distraction for ya." Autumn says softly "If you can be hidden, go scout and return with what's waiting for us..."

Selia nods, and heads towards the clearing, trying to remain unseen, unheard, and elsewise undetected.

GAME: Selia rolls stealth: (20)+29: 49

You paged Selia with 'clearing is completely empty except the center, which has a large glowing portal in the air. there is things along the ground at the portal, maybe whatever it was took to open it.'

Selia returns soon enough, taking care to make a little bit of noise while still a mild distance away, as not to startle anyone too much. "Looks empty, cept for some sorta hole in da air towards da middle. Some stuff 'round it, maybe magic stuff ta open da thing. I did na get too close."

"Corruption is no accident. Only the softskins are fools enough to be ignorant of the ruin they cause..." The lupine's curt response and barb are cut short with the scout's return. "A hole in the air?"

Kojot nods. "We'd better move closer, then," he muses. "Let those who understand magic figure out what's going on."

Lothos nods, "Yes, I'll take a look, see whats going on. Probably some tear letting out all sorts of nasty things."

Autumn watches everything quietly, trying to absorb everything and listening intently.

<OOC> Corra says, "so moving into clearing?" <OOC> Lothos says, "Yes, I will move in and check it out" <OOC> Kojot says, "I'm moving into the clearing as well." Autumn asks softly "Anyone want to be... enhanced before we go in?" <OOC> Selia nods. <OOC> Autumn says, "I'd like to throw an Enlarge Person on Kojot."

Autumn moves up to Kojot and says "Would being bigger help you?"

Kojot makes a 'so-so' gesture with a hand. "Slightly more strength, but I rely more on finesse," he admits. "Might be a bit of a wash."

Autumn nods to Kojot and shrugs.

Autumn says softly "Let's go."

It is still quiet as you move into th clearing. LOoking closer, the center were the portal is, there are four corpses at the cardinal points, some kind of summoning ritual. THere is a heap of something right under the portal too.

"The hoofprints vanish about halfway to the portal," Kojot points out. "Then some bootprints -- recent bootprints -- continue the path to the portal." He looks over at the mages. "Any insights you've been able to determine?"

Lothos looks around a bit, nodding, "Someones holding it open, it should have closed on its own. Though I'm not positive if its being held from this side, or the other side."

Dire Wolf snuffs at the ground carefully and approaches the portal. "Mounts stopped. Vanished. Riders went into the-" Her words cut off into a snarl and bared teeth as she realizes the clearing feels familiar. As the bodies look potentially familiar in dress. "Defilers!" She may discover who is holding the portal open as she starts into a rapid trot directly for it.

Autumn pauses and mutters to herself, then reaches out to tug the blanket off of whatever it is from fourty feet away to expose it...

As soon as Autumn does that there is an increased scent of rotting flesh. What is revealed is a man stretched out and staked to the ground, a shortsword piercing each wrist and ankle as well as one through his chest. They are driven in to the hilt, pinning him to the ground. Somehow he looks to be alive still, barely.

Dire Wolf stops short at the sound, then the scent reaches her. Her head snaps around to stare at the form. The glare softens somewhat when the staked man is revealed. "What happened here?!" she snaps out in demand.

Autumn pages: It should be dispelable right?

Lothos grimaces, "Ugh, thats not very pleasant. Well, he is whats keeping it open....but..." He frowns, tryign to figure out how to release the fellow...without killing him, which would likely be fastest.

Selia keeps quiet, letting the wizardly sorts do their thing.

Lothos grunts, "Someone pull the sword, and I can try to heal him while its happening....I think that might work...buuuut." He shrugs.

One life compared to Ea's pain? There is no debate. The large wolf pads up to grasp the hilt of the sword in her jaws so that she can abruptly remove it.

Kojot carefully stands next to the portal, clawblades at the ready. "If someone else can pull the sword, I'll do my best to keep anything from coming throught the portal until it closes," he states.

As the sword starts to come out, the portal starts to flicker. The figure screams out in pain and out the sword comes, and with it both the portal and the man's life extinguish, and his body rapidly decays.

Lothos grunts in surpise as the wolf doesn't hesitate. "Well...apparently he couldn't have been saved anyhow. But next time, don't do that, we should have watched it carefully in case we were wrong."

You are all aware of four figures emerging from each of the cardinal directions. They are leading horses though they drop the reins and the horses just vanish into mist as if they were not there. Each figure is tall, wearing worn armor and tattered cloak. And none of them have heads. They draw swords and move 20ft in. which puts them at about 80 feet from you, 1 north, 1 west, 1 south, 1 east. no suprise rounds...

Autumn nods slowly as she watches everything closely "He was frozen in time, to keep his life force intact to lock the portal open... Not a casual, easy spell to cast."

Lothos raises straight up off the ground, hovering about twenty feet in the air. He looks around, smiling slightly, "Lets see if I can't get some more help." He begins to speak a long incantation, gesturing as he does.

<OOC> Dire Wolf will alter her shape. <OOC> Corra says, "okay." <OOC> Corra says, "takes the whole round?" <OOC> Dire Wolf says, "Standard, but I am not moving." <OOC> Corra says, "okay, go ahead" GAME: Corra advances the initiative order.

To say that the wolf is angered would be an understatement, but she is wise enough to not rush in. As mentioned before, it is much easier that they come to her to die. They have armor and weapons, so does she. Her growl grows to a snarl, that then becomes a bellow as her large form grows larger. Black flesh expands and subsumes white fur. Head and teeth grow larger while she rises from four legs to two. They want to ravage Ea? Ea has means to ravage them in return.

Dire Wolf grows in mass and muscle, surface thickening into stippled dark hide and jaw expanding into a massive reptilian maw filled with vicious teeth.

<OOC> Selia says, "Duck behind whatever can, and hide/stealth. Best defence is foe not knowing where to attack..."

Kojot takes a wary stance. "I don't like being in the middle of a pincer move," he growls, warily watching the approaching figures.

<OOC> Corra says, "okay. roll stealth. there are a few rocks can hide behind." <OOC> Autumn says, "Will I be able to keep track of Selia?"

Selia eeps and dives for cover. She's been called a coward before, and is fairly okay with that.

Autumn chants under her breath while gesturing, focusing her will on her fellows. Everyone suddenly gets a rush as the enchantment causes them all to move much faster than they were...

He begins speaking arcane words and gestures, throwing a bolt of electricity into the northern one. There is almost a hint of resistance of the air, but the spell still shocks it. The latern archons each hover over one of them and seem to bless them all somehow.

The headless things keep moving. The one that was lightning bolted gets hurt my the spikes but doesn't stop it makes it the full 20'. The west and east move 10' through the spikes and seem to be moving slower. The southern, breaks free of the web, but then gets stuck 10' closer.

Lothos tries again, but this time his lightning bolt vanishes before it can connect with the target, and his archons, well, most of them scatter in panic, one though has the gumption to fire two light blasts.

THe Allosaurus takes out the one she was fighting, leaving just the two standing. The one tries to take out Kojot and just misses, but Selia gets hit by the sword of the one she went after. Lothos moves and heals the dino a bit.

Kojot shreds into the Headless, tearing it up with devastating efficiency, one hit after another. As the armor collapses, the half-orc snorts. "Not bad... but not good enough," he sneers at the fallen foes.

Autumn swallows as the fear effect finally dissapates as the last armored figure drops. She looks around "What were they up to and who opened the gate?"

Selia idly kicks at a Headless piece, and mutters a few things not approprate for a lady, grabbing a bandage from one of her pockets to dab at the hit she took earlier. "And wot can we do ta make sure dey don't try again?"

Autumn says "They might be resistant to magic, but fire purifies all. If we pile everything together and burn it, it should stop them from rising again..."

YOu are able to get everything together and get the corpses burned, even the ones used to sacrifice for the portal. Apparently it looked like someone opened a portal and then lost to whatever came through so was used to keep the portal open where whatever summoned the undead to gather souls for it, which is often what Dullahans are used for. The druid of your party, the shapechanger makes sure that certain respects are paid and then you return to report the findings. More druids are sent to heal the grove and restore the land. You are thanked for your service and given a suitable reward.
