Just west of the Northern Highbridge and east of the arena, commerce blooms. Noisy and bustling, most anything may be purchased here for a price. Vendors from all cultures sell their wares from exotically colored carts, and the smells of different nations and far-off city-states mix with local ones from Alexandria and its riverbanks.

For all its commerce, visitors are advised to keep hold of their purses. Even the merchants possess a certain, cunning look. Most are positioned at carts or stalls as opposed to a formal storefront, with trade here being mobile, and visiting from all parts of the world.

Though the quality of goods suffers here compared to Upper Alexandria, the options are more diverse. Too, the oversight of the Watch is slightly less, and during times events are held at the Arena, chaos abounds. After dark, the square becomes a hangout for bards and other entrepreneurs whose business is best conducted by night; the shadows at the edges of the square often contain furtive figures engaging in their own brand of business.

It's a nice day isn't it? If by nice you mean grey clouds and a bit of a cool breeze, then yeah, it's wonderful. despite the gloomy conditions, there is one halfling that is skipping through the market district, definitely making her way around other people as best as she can.....and she's quick for such a little girl too.

"Seven! Seven for a silver! Why, such a bargain, SUCH a bargain!" The Lower Market is as colorful as ever. Compared often to the markets of the Golden Sands, the Alexandrian comes close to such mercantile glory. Today, a middle-aged gnome hoists a pair of silver toads in to the air as a young woman passes by, and as the lucht makes her way through. The toads are covered in swirls and faux jewels and glitter in the spring's growing sunlight.

"SUCH a bargain!" he calls out and is near-drowned out by--

"And FOOD! Food for yer bellies! Straight from the fields and woods, here. Pure BOAR, guaranteed to--"

"Whisky! Whisky's finest! Guaranteed to floor even the Lady Sandiel in one gulp!"

"Hah! Nargin, you fooler! Forget the WHISKY! Try my--"

Mogrinaar leans against a stack of crates with his Falchion out. A whetstone in hand slides carefully down the sharp edge as the Orc provides maintenance on his blade. The blade itself seems to be one of extremely fine quality. As the chatter of the marketplace goes on, the towering Orc seems to be in observation mode. Never really fancied himself a prime shopper, though there were times when doing some browsing was a necessary evil. The pushiness of the vendors was annoying though, and the stench of the humans here only mediated by the smell of the baked goods. Another day in Alexandria...

Another day in alexandria indeed. and the Lucht was determined to make the most of it. Still skipping through most of the vendors, she does stop at one vendor that sells baubles for a decent price. The woman there actually say she makes them herself, and it's somewhat obvious that she's not very good at it. It could be called modern art with how badly it looks. However, as she stands there, she spots another jewelry vendor who has a little skill, but has no idea how to display them. so the Lucht skips over there and.....starts to rearrange the jewelry, despite the woman's protests.

And enter the dwarf. Shilde wanders into the market district with... trepidation would be too strong a word, but definitely an air of reluctance. A scowl forms on her features as the calls for people to buy this or that get ever more common, but the scowl seems to do little to deter. It isn't until she brandishes her cudgel at one particular half-elf vendor that a small bubble of moderate peace seems to grow around her. Well, it would be peace, if it weren't for the large dog that follows her, prancing along gaily, seeming to more than make up for the dwarf woman's bad attitude by trying to make friends with anyone who comes close.

This, THIS is Alexandria, in all its melting-pot glory. Despite the overcast (and it IS overcast), folks are about, swarming the Lower Trades with a hustle and a bustle reminiscent of a gnome after that perfect set of gnose warmers in winter.

"MOONSHINE! Not that boot-leg crap, fresh! Fresh and hardy and made to--"

"Chili! Chili to go with the moonshine, folk! Bechum's own recipe, beat out Tanglr the Khazad last year!"

"Pearls! Pearls and glass beads! For those who DON'T want hair on their chest!" comes the snarky voice of one llyranesi, which sends the chili caller-out, an oruch, into spasms.

Only in Alexandria...

Across the way, the gnome speaks up, "Beautiful, one of a kind!"

"Like your foot!" another calls out, and the gnome stiffens, and fires off, "Just because you have two left ones, Jessup!"

Mogrinaar notices a small girl (Chloe) running by as he continues to sharpen his blade. The young one seems so carefree in this place. Youth....he thinks to himself, though youth he was not accustomed to. His tribesmen brought their children up through tough love, working them and preparing them for battle. Holding the blade up in the light and being satisfied with the results, he returns it to his hip and puts the whetstone back in his backpack. With a stretch of his tree branch like arms he raises an eyebrow at the banter going back and forth between the vendors. Such prattle and nonsense....how do they sustain this silliness for such long stretches of time. Kor help us...

Shilde stops at one stall, a tea-seller, though not before eyeing the oruch sharpening his sword nearby first. She unties a pouch from her belt, dropping it on the stall's counter... while she waits for the human vendor to inspect its contents, she buries her fingers in the dog's neck fur to bring him to heel. "Stay close t'me, Rocky," she demands of the canine, and, for all its energy and exuberance, the animal doesn't seem to fight it much.

Chloe is finally pushed away from the stall the woman has, but not before she finishes rearranging the jewelry. Almost immediately she gets a lot of new customers, and the lucht smiles. She then skips BACK by the oruch sharpening his sword to see the......"PUPPY!"...she squeals as she runs over and gets the dog's attention in a genuine show of affection.....somehow. >.>

Kravar shoulders his way through a knot of shoppers near a wagon selling casks of wine. He glances across a momentarily open field of view, catching sight of at least one familiar face, but then it's lost as Chloe skips out of his line of sight again.

"Two LEFT? Why, they look mighty handsome, to me!" it's the oruch merchant and he wriggles his toes in his sandals to show them off! By some measures, they are quite impressive. Say, for one, the hair curls over them not unlike a shrub. If a druid had been tending it. To which it is to say it is very hairy and very robust!

Oh, get those disgusting things out of here," snarls the gnome as he turns away and hoists the toads high once more!

The oruch looks surprised a moment, before, "Well, at least they ain's skinny sticks!"

Nearby, the llyranesi holds up the mirrors. "Beautiful and flawless, just like you!" And she hoists the mirror, turning it so it reflects the running lucht. "See the beauty it reflects? The flawlessness of a child!" Uh. Oh.

Chloe stops a couple of feet away from 'Rocky' to make sure he's not startled by the lucht coming for him. She then sticks out her hand for the dog to sniff, but she DOES address the llyranesi. "I'm not a child. I'm a fully grown woman." She says with a smile. She knows her height mistakes her for a child.....and she's not doing anything to dissuade the notion.....

Whatever control Shilde had over 'her' dog is lost when Chloe arrives, the 'puppy' more than happy, eager even, to return any freely given affection with a metric tonne of his own. He takes one moment to sniff the lucht's hand, before giving it a mighty lick. And then he's straining against Shilde's hold on his neck to shove his nose into Chloe's face... the hapless dwarf is dragged the foot it takes him to get that close.

Only skinny from hard work!" snorts the gnome, and the oruch snorts back. The oruch turns back around, though he shoots a look BACK OVER HIS SHOULDER before resuming his: "Chili! Guaranteed ta put hair on yer chest! Bechum's own recipe, beat out Tanglr the Khazad last year in the Cook Off! Come an get it!"

Oh!" the merchant says, when addressed by Chole. For a moment, startlement flickers across the otherwise-pristing sildanyari face, a countenance otherwise as pure as glass before she recovers... "The beauty of YOUTH! See its perfection in this young woman!" And to Chloe, "A free necklace if you'll play along..." whispered!

Merchants. Alexandria's full of'em!

Kravar makes his way over towards the dog and dwarf, and winds up more or less next to Mogrinaar. A grin spreads over his features as he watches for a moment, then he glances around at some of the other local merchants. His eyes are drawn to the oruch selling chili. After a moment's consideration, Kravar turns to Mogrinaar and nods in the chili-vendor's direction. "Do you know him?"

Chloe smiles to the Llyranesi and whispers 'sure, I'll play along'. She manages to say it just before she's neraly drowned in dog slobber from the affectionate pooch. She giggles a lot and gently scratches the dog's ears and back. She gives the oruch merchant a bit of a 'look' before petting the dog some more.

Mogrinaar merely shakes his head. This is typical of the city. So central is this place that it cannot help but be a bustling center of activity. The oruch observes the young woman approach the 'puppy' and grins slightly, his tusks baring. His brief moment of distraction is interuptd by the question which almost shakes him out of the uncharaceristic daze he was in.

"Uh...no. But from what they are saying that food is top notch. A little bland for my tastes, but its better than the slop they serve in some of the taverns." he notes. The large Oruch looks about. "Pretty busy today. Almost a frantic sense of urgency to it all. I wonder why....perhaps they are trying to sell before tax season hits bwaha!" he gruntchortles in Kravar's direction.

Kravar joins in with an agreeable chuckle of his own, finding this talk of tax and seasons humorous as only a nomad adventuring sellsword can. "I suppose with the Arena closed the idle folk of this city have to find other ways to spend their time," he replies. He gives the sword being sharpened a look of what might be professional interest before glancing at some of the nearby vendors, as if the sight reminded him of something.

Shilde lets out a heavy sigh when she realizes that her dog won't be deterred. She doesn't let go, but, assured that the mongrel isn't going to run off and be a nuisance, she turns her attention back to the tea-vendor who pushes a rather skimpy assortment of silver and copper... mostly copper... pieces her way. She scoops them up and drops them in a smaller pouch. Then scowls a bit more, casting another dark glance the Oruch's way, before his words settle in and she takes a moment to consider. "Somethin' in the air," she mutters. "C'mon, Rocky. Time t'go," she tells the dog. "We don't need t'be here when the storm comes." She turns to leave, but her hold on Rocky stops her short as the dog seems rooted in place introducing himself to his new best friend forever.

"...Skinny sticks? SKINNY STICKS!!?" the middle-aged gnome merchant's voice cracks as he turns to EYEBALL at the oruch. And now those nearby might clearly see what others had noticed before...a flicker of blue, around the eyes and not unlike a ghost--a faint...whisp...that's there and not-there and churns over his eyelids, erupts from his mouth in, "SKINNY STICKS! WHY, I'VE GNOMED MORE TAVERN WENCHES THAN YOU'LL KNOW IN A LIFETIME!!!"

Yes, yes he really DID say that. That's possibly why the oruch SHOULD be staring at him, should be staring at him, mouth ag-og or maybe laughing, except now the oruch is taking a great swipe at the boiling vat of extra-spiced chili, with a thunder'ous roar his race is known for...!!!

"WELL, WHAT'D YA HAFTA PAY'EM??" the oruch roars. It...everything. Everything went from zero to sixty in less time it took a gobber to swipe a ruby from a khazad noble's beard.

Overhead, the sun arcs lazily by, partially obscured by heavy clouds.

The hottest chili in Alexandria. The hottest chili, made from an interspecies contest that stars two of the most stubborn, hard-headed races known to Ea: the khazad and the oruch, on a race for recognition and gut-burning princedom. It roars forward, this 'Bechum's winning recipe' from the overturned cauldron, hearty sausages, cut meats, kidney beans...roaring forward and splashing over the marketplace, where a clamour quickly starts up and merchants begin yelling, cussing, swearing.

The oruch's name is called out and another merchant steps forward, clobbering the man across his jaw and another steps forward to take on the gnome.

True CHAOS.

NOT the comforting chaos of Ceinara or even the heady chaos of growth and new wilderness. No, this is darker, something more sinister--though that may be difficult to keep in mind as the shrieking gnome is TACKLED--all of this happening within MOMENTS--and the two, silver toads tumble free from his fingers...

...and begin, flickering with that same, disturbing BLUE...

...to...GROW...

Chloe makes a bit of a face. "Great." She says before she pats the dog. "I can't stay here. I have to help." She then looks to Llyranesi. "Get down and stay there. First chance you get...run for another district and leave your wares. Gold isn't worth your life." She then watches the frogs.......grow. "Whatever's going on, Even Tarien can't be enjoying this...."

Mogrinaar sidesteps the boiling cauldrons of chili and places a hand on the hilt of his weapon. Regarding Kravar he states, "There is not only something strange in the air...look." he motions "There is a flicker of blue behind the Gnomes eyes...and a flicker coming from their toads. I fear that something supernatural is afoot here. It is as if the spirits have ....have started this mess." he ponders saying a prayer internally to Kor. His eyes dart from one area of the market to the next, trying to search out a source, if there is one. His hand at the ready....fingers itching to unleash hell.

Chili. Like most dwarves, Shilde is a fan of chili. Not, however, when it is unceremoniously splashed across her hair and face. And by an ORC of all people. And it burns. Which only fuels the anger as she lets go of her dog and pulls the cudgel out of its loop at her hip. "Watch yer bloody aim you filthy mongrel spawn!" she shouts at the chili vendor, despite the fact that he's a bit busy with his gnome arch nemesis.

Kravar turns his head at the commotion, just in time to see the chili spill. He takes a few steps back, looking down to see how far it spreads and make sure he's not going to get splashed. When he looks up again it's with an expression of irritation. Then he catches sight of the gnome getting tackled, and his expression darkens. "Spirits? Wonderful." He wades into the commotion, headed in the direction he last saw that gnome.

"Haw! GET OFF MEH! I was only kiddin'!" but the oruch's merchants' voice is a lie--even as he speaks the words his features are twisted in rage. Guards are arriving on the scene, Alexandria having been in a heightened state...

"STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES--" the gnome cat-calls in a sing-song voice, even as he turns around and wags his scrawny ass at the howling oruch.

The toads he'd thrown continue to grow, their glossy, faux-gemstone features glittering in a way no toad's should--with thigk, blue fog as they turn their eyes to the now-screaming CROWD...

Mogrinaar to the rescue, or so he thinks. The Oruch moves forward with determination pulling out that nasty blade of his. He attempts to charge at his foe, but unfortunately there are too many people in the way. The toad tries to attack the Orc, but its blow glances off the armor. He rears back his weapon and takes a swipe, when a group of commoners knock into his right elbow as they are trying to run away. His slice goes wide. "Will ye watch it already!" he shouts in frustration.

As the oruch forces his way through the crowd, the toads don't seem to notice. Not at once. They're too busy staring at the rush of people, the CROWD with reptilian, hungry eyes--eyes not quite human, not quite /humanoid/ as they fixate on the crowd...

...and then the oruch, first attempting to nab him with a bulbuous, sticky tongue, a horrid thing that stinks of well, toad. ...and then the dog, as it lunges forward...

One of them rears back and SPITS! shooting a glob of spittle over the oruch, which lands, and quickly coating him in horrible, horrible GLITTER...

They'd tried to blind him.

Shilde is more than ready to lay some beat down on the Chili merchant, but before she can move Rocky is at her elbow, whining. And then she sees the toads. The monstrous, unnatural toads. "What the..." She shakes her head, then sighs. Her hand laces into his fur, and after a few uttered words Rocky's teeth seem to gain a sparkly sheen... and he's off, charging at one of the toads like a furry avenger.

Kravar finally makes his way to the edge of the action, having drawn his longsword along the way but then having had to raise it above his head to avoid accidentally cutting anyone in the crowded market. His free hand was busy forcing people out of his way, and he never got a change to draw his shield. His eyes widen at the sight of the toads, but then he steps forward, chopping at the nearest one with a two-handed grip.

(and missing)

Sticking her tongue out at the frogs, Chloe skips her way over to Mogrinaar and puts her hand on Mogrinaar. She says a few words that Mog can't hear.....but her hand glows.

<OOC> Lahar says, "Rocky takes 1 point of Wis damage and will need to save again next round. ^^;"

Rocky keeps hounding (heh, heh) after his toad of choice, nipping at the thing's legs as it, for the moment, ignores him. Shilde doesn't approach; instead, she seems to be studying the toads, close enough to move in if she needs to, but otherwise keeping her distance. "COld iron!" she yells, "If you have any, use it!"

GAME: Kravar rolls weapon1: (1)+9: 10

Kravar slashes reflexively at the toad, getting a solid hit in. He watches the 'puppy' tear into it, and not to be outdone he grasps his sword with both hands and tries to slash again!...but alas, he is indeed outdone.

GAME: Chloe casts Bless.

Stepping back from Og for a second, Chloe no longer looks like the child that she seemed earlier. "Tarien, bless these warriors to protect these people so you can have more tales to tell...." And a pulse of light resonates over Mogrinaar, Kravar Rocky and Shilde.

"Oye, a little help finishin this one off....I dont want it to fart is guts all over my armor...just got this thing polished!" he grows tusks bared behind his helmet.

Moving like great, warty bohemeoths, the toads, their eyes of fake gemstones and their jaws slack, move towards the tiny, defenseless little puppy and lurch forward--

--a tongue flies loose, just as its brother disengages (carefully) from Mogrinaar, and lunges towards the aesir. The first attack misses, flying over the head of the (poor, defenseless, adorable) puppy, while the second latches onto Kravar's armor, and the big man narrowly misses being yanked towards the hungry maw.

GAME: Shilde rolls 1d20+5: (7)+5: 12

Rocky dances like a butterfly... well, a large, heavy, furry butterfly as he manages to keep one step ahead of the toad's nasty tongue. And he continues to harass, snapping his jaws at the unnatural creature.

"Oh, my BEAUTIFUL!!!" That's from the gnome, who the authorities are even now wrestling to the ground, and his voice sails like a wild thing and abruptly, breaks into sobs--

GAME: Kravar rolls weapon1+2: (2)+9+2: 13

Kravar gets THWACKed from behind by the second toad's tongue, and is nearly pulled off of his feet before he manages to brace himself and resist. As the oruch's weapon lands, the first toad seems to blink a few times...and then its body begins to fall inwards, not unlike what happens when an artificer declares, "*I* know the recipe!!" and rushes into the kitchen to bake bread. It collapses, its eyes rolling into one another, deflating even as it falls...over...landing...atop...Mogrinaar with a great and sickening squish.

When it does, dust rises, a small, blue-and-brown cloud of it rushing up briefly from the ground.

See its brother fall (if these things can see) the other toad gives a moist, thunderous burp--and its back gives a sort of whiiiirrrrr noise as wings unfurl and it...takes to the air.

The wings beat quickly, like a mechanical thing attached to this thing which at least seemed very much alive...and indeed, is 'bleeding' all over Mogrinaar...

"Rocky! To me!" the dwarf woman commands, and this time the dog doesn't hesitate to obey as the pair retreat away from the spreadying 'blood' substance on the ground. Airborne, there's not much the druid or her animal ally can do to the toad for now.

Around you, Chaos continues to erupt like some unholy fountain. That which emerges is not the warm and comforting sort, not the cheerful sort, nor the warmth of a gentle fire...but that of a darker nature as the sticky 'blood' soaks into the cobblestone. Around you, the yelling and screaming continues...and the fights...

...this had taken seconds. Just seconds. To erupt.

Kravar tilts his head back to glare at the toad as it grows wings and begins to fly. He hefts his longsword as if considering hurling it after the creature, but then thinks better of it. Instead he shifts it to hold in his shield hand so that he can reach down and tug at the remains of the other toad to free Mogrinaar.

GAME: Chloe rolls 2d6: (3): 3

Knowing she's nowhere near strong enough to get the toad off of Mogrinaar, CHloe asks for another healing prayer for Kravar before she tries to get out of the grease. Thankfully, she doesn't have far to fall if she DOES slip.

Mogrinaar moves with a purpose now that Kravar helps to free him. "Thanks" he states in his deep gruff voice as he shoves his way out of the mess. The Orch looks for a target but the other toad is ...flying? "What in the 9 hells is going on here...toads that fly...?" he barks as he moves out of the slime.

"Give it here, you sumbitch!" a khazad merchant with sedate beard lined with crafted glass roars at a lucht merchant not ten feet from you. He's one of several losing their minds, their tempers.

"Ma'am, if you'll come this way..." this from one of the Watch, who thanks to the toad dropping has a way to get to all of you. He speaks to Chloe and Shilde, then looks up and nods to both Kravar, to Mogrinaar. "If you'll come this way, I think we have a path..."

Around, the screaming.

Overhead, the toad lurches (flies) away to more of it. Someone gets together the wherewithall to throw something, but it falls far short of the creature.

Timestop: A07: Local Alexandria Market District has left.

GAME: Shilde rolls 1d20+5: (14)+5: 19

Kravar follows the Watch as directed, stowing away his sword and generally trying his best to look like a lawful heroic adventurer. "I don't know what happened," he remarks, voice full of sincerity. "One moment it was the market, and then suddenly..." he shakes his head.

Chloe walks her way with the watch. However, once she is safe, she walks over towards Rocky and puts her hands to his head, singing a soft tune and casting a restoration spell to try and get rocky back to normal.

Shilde doesn't seem initially inclined to follow the watch, but a combination of Rocky tugging at her elbow and the fact that the crowd, not normally her favourite environment to begin with, is even more chaotic than usual has her grudgingly following.

Only then does Rocky slurp an appreciative thanks on Chloe. He doesn't know what she did, of course, only that he's suddenly feeling better.

Screaming, and...the soft THUNK! as a fist lands in the khazad's face from the lucht's tiny but determined fist. It belongs to someone who could be the cousin of half of any dozen lucht in the city...

"We believe you, but hurry up! We need someone to get to the monks at the Spire!" the Watch yells, trying to be heard above the crowd. "They have a harp..."

Even as he speaks up, a giantborn is thrown into him, sending the Watch off his feet and onto the ground. Dangerously close to the slime. Around, pandemonium. Anger. Accusations over anything and EVERYTHING fly overhead.

And very little of it makes SENSE.

Mogrinaar follows the Watch growling at the cowardice of the toad, but almost overwhelmed at the chaos that is going on here. "If we are to leave these folk be, then be quick about it. We need information to rid the city of this plague." he growls.

Kravar casts glances over his shoulder at the rioting in the marketplace. "I don't see what we could do for them. When I thought it was just the gnome, I could have subdued him. Those...toads," he seems hesitant to use the word but can't think of a better one. "That was clear enough. Monsters, to be slain. But the entire market? Better to leave them to the watch."

Chloe looks at the riot and sighs. "The watch is better at this than I am. I can only reach people's groin."

Mogrinaar grunts as he moves along. "So why in the blazes are we going to see Monks. Looks more like we need a Wizard or a damned Exorcist!" he comments.

Mogrinaar says, "By the way ....nice work you all. My name is Mogrinaar"

Kravar doesn't have much to contribute to the conversation, but he seems to pay close attention to the route they are led along. He's probably never been this way before - and might also need to retrace his steps in a hurry.
