PRP: Fast Zombie Day
For whatever reason you wish to have, today finds you all in the village. Your reasons are your own, and the village is quiet today.
At first you hear a faint sound from afar, then the crack of a whip, and the screams of a woman. As the noise draws nearer you see a cloud of dust headed this way from the main road, in front of the cloud is a wagon pulled by four horses. On the wagon is a man who appears to be whipping them to move as fast as they can. A woman sits next to him, staring back into the dust cloud and screaming "They are still coming!"

Simple errands never seem as simple as Vennan would hope. Not in Alexandria. The sounds of whipcracking and screaming cause him to sigh heavily, already wearily frustrated with whatever is going on. He makes a beeline for the sounds, alert. Ferawyn runs for the sounds of whipcracking and screaming, without the least bit of hestitation. One thing she hated was the sound of a whip, no matter how useful it was in whatever situation.
One of the easier (but by no means foolproof) ways of telling an adventurer apart from a normal person is how they react to screams and sounds of terror. Your average commoner would likely run away, while adventurers would likely run /toward/ the commotion. Thus it is that Kojot is loping towards the wagon - and whatever trouble is pursuing it.
Sebropert had been unloading wood off the back of a Swiftclaw named Srassha when the commotion got his attention. His skull-like head and forward sweeping horns turn in the direction of the charging cart. He coohed softly to the Swiftclaw before stepping around her. He motions with a hand for the softskin villagers nearby to return to their homes, his large claws flicking with the motion. "Find safe spot. Take children," he rumbled before following his red headed companion towards the cart. Dropping to all fours he moves swifter to catch up.
The wagon pulls into the village square, the driver jerking hard on the reigns to pull it to a stop. The horses are exhausted, covered with lather showing that they have been running hard for probably far too long. One of them looks almost ready to collapse, and they all seem to stagger, panting with exhaustion. The driver jumps down, hollaring, "Everyone inside! Block your doors! They killed mort!" He turns to reach for the woman, she is sobbing hystercialy "Mort!" she cries out, and the man grabs her by the arm, dragging her towards the nearest building. "We must get inside!" He looks at those around with weapons, his eyes wide. "Please! Your armed, they are coming, you must stop them! I'll pay you whatever I have!"
Its about then, that the dust is settling and you can see figures in the distance, figures moving fast, sprinting humanoid forms covered with long hooded robes.
By now most of the villagers are already out of sight, trouble tends to send common folks for safety.
Even after all these years coming up and back for his grandmother, Remethaer can't quite see the difference between the herbalist supplies sold in the cramped shop here versus the myriad of businesses in the city. The Dog is waiting outside when he exits, twisting some root or another between thumb and forefinger under the lamplights as the mastiff rises from sitting to stare expectantly at the plant. Perhaps it is a treat! "Oh, it's not for you," he laughs, lowering his arm and dropping it back down into the half-wrapped parcel. The whipping isn't enough to draw his attention but once the shouting has started the Xian looks over with a bit of a frown.
Ferawyn shakes her head a bit. "Sebropert, help me guide these horses away from the entrance to the village." She says as she pats the horses and talks to them urging them to move only a few feet and around a corner to make sure they don't get hurt. She says keeping a VERy keen eye on the approaching people.
"... I really should've seen this coming." Vennan grumbles, drawing his rapier and mace as he drops into a fighting stance, already tense. "I would advise continuing to flee. We shall hold them off here."
The driver of the wagon almost doesn't wait to see if you accept his offer. He drags the woman inside a nearby home and slams the door shut.
The distant figures are moving closer, faster than mere humans could run too. There appear to be five of them, sprinting closer and closer to the village, for anyone with keen eyesight, you might notice no real signs of weapons.
Sebropert pages: Keen Scent. Oh yeah. Let me know if that doesn anything. Remethaer can't help but think that 'Mort' is a bad name for a person who doesn't -want- to be dead... but he has the good graces not to say anything out loud. That would be rude. He gives a snap of his finger and makes a gesture that has the Dog walking along to his right as he leaves the herbalist behind and crosses the square towards the main road into town. He watches the pair retreat from their carriage towards whatever building they so choose and offers, "Level heads, yea? A proper chat might be a good idea before we start stabbing at strangers..."
The black Sith'Makar looked at Ferawyn as she moved to get the horses away from the entrance. His head turned between the oncoming sprinting humanoids, and the cart with horses. Grunting he nods and throws his significant weight against the back of the cart to help push it around the corner. The incoming threat brings an angry growl into Sebropert's voice. "Horse live if they do not," He says with a point of his tail in the other direction. Again he pushes until the cart is in place, his behemoth frame turns to start stalking to the road. He straightens to show his full height and scaly frame, claws and teeth bared and ready. "Stand here and may hurt village. Charge, take them there." He says with a claw pointed outward.
You paged Sebropert with 'You catch a faint wiff of decay in the air. Something rotton, but not horrible, maybe something freshly dead.' From afar, Sebropert nods. Ferawyn turns, once the horses are out of harm's way and......squints her eyes. She walks her way over towards Sebropert and tilts her head. "Hold thy fury my friend." She says gently in sylvan before she starts to walk her way forward, towards the five people coming for them. She then looks to remethaer. "Good idea. There might be a bit of a mix up." She says with a glance to Vennan.
Kojot takes a defensive stance several paces to the left of Vennan. "Let's see if we can get them outflanked before they cause too much trouble," the half-orc suggests.
Vennan gives a nod to Ferawyn and Kojot ach in turn. "Sound tactics." He replies, darting to the right to take up a flanking position, in anticipation of the arrival of those distant figures.
Sebropert's large nostrils flair, and then his blue eyes narrow in their sunken sockets. "Sharpear Windrunner," he says to Ferawyn. "Am smelling death. Fresh death." His head shook fiercely as his frills and head spines lift to full height, bringing him to about seven feet in height. "Death should not walk." Dropping to all fours, Sebropert's long tail begins to swish. "Folly to wait." His claws set into the ground as his muscles tense. "Cannot do five. But have warned all."
Whomever it is charging at the villiage is getting even closer now, perhaps just three hundred yards at this point. Close enough you can see the cloaks flapping behind them, long thin limbs as they sprint across the ground at incredible speeds. Its easier to confirm now, they do not have any weapons, and whatever clothing is under the cloaks seems rather torn and tattered.
From afar, Sebropert would charge now. "No point in waiting." Sebropert pages: Not with that smell. You paged Sebropert with 'Go ahead and pose, see if the others follow :)' Ferawyn takes a deep breath as she watches the forms come closer. As they run, she lowers herself to the ground and places a hand upon the ground, watching the incoming five intensely. "Wait for them to come closer........" "Gray Lady has her share of work already," Remethaer says, rubbing the back of his neck nervously as he watches the racing band. He hesitates another moment before pulling the longrifle out and over his shoulder, running his thumb along the ornate plate set into the front of the stock-- nearest the barrel. "World's full of bloody troubles... a scrap can't always be the first response." He draws in a deep breath and shouts, trying to reach the runners, "Slow it down, boys. Let's have a talk, yea?" Sebropert pages: Want me to just go, or wait for three? You paged Sebropert with 'Go for it' "Yes." Vennan shouts after Remethaer. "Bloodshed is pointless. Let us try to determine if this conflict can be resolved peacefully before we resort to violence."
Sebropert does not wait for any others, his muscles tense and he springs forward, planning to meet these beings before they are already on top of the village. He claws mark deep furrows into the ground as he charges. The maw of his mouth spreads and saliva sprays from elongated teeth as he lets forth a bestial roar that had more often then not stopped most people unfamiliar with his kind in the past. His path would lead him head long into the lead runner, a head lowers to as he prepars for what he expected to be a violent collision.
From afar, Sebropert wishes to know if intimidation would be even viable in this situation?
Sebropert pages: Roaring, slavery maw, giant Sith'Makar, etc.
You paged Sebropert with 'Not vs these guys, they are imune to mental stuff like that.'
Sebropert pages: I figured. Seb tries intimidation first as a rule.

The zombie, and its clear thats what it is now. You can smell the decay, but the body looks like its only been dead a few days. As the blade tears a hole through where its kidney might be, puss and ooze roll down its side. The zombie appears to be very fast, because it turns quickly, slamming its hands like blunt hammers at Vennan, a blow actually connecting solidly against him.

The Dog growls and barks a deep, throaty bark, shifting its paws wide and preparing to charge. Remethaer, still frowning as the players begin to sort themselves out, holds the well-trained mastiff in place with a quick, crisp phrase. The animate dead, of course. Up comes the long barrel of the magitech rifle, braced firm against his shoulder. The detailed scrawl along its length coming alive. The thunderous report issues a split-second after a spiral of coalescing energy curls tight and shoots forward. A chunk from one of the creatures spirals off as its torso half-twists with the impact.

The two Zombies that are not entangled really aren't paying attention to the grass grasping at them and struggling to pin them down. They instead move to swarm around Seb, encirling him. One of them slams a fleshy fist into the dragonkin as the other ineffectually swipes at him and only getting air. Bruising is evident on Seb, showing that perhaps he will not hold out much longer.

As one Zombie falls, bits of brain flicking off the razor blade of a rapier, the other zombies continue to follow thier mindless commands to kill. A hand is swung at Seb, but the dragonkin manages to avoid the blow easily.

Even though his dark scales hid the bruising, Sebropert did not move like a healthy creature. His frills hung limp, and his spines quivered instead of groans of pain. Yet pain brought out the feralness in him as he sank his jaws into the head of another one of the foul beasts, and tore chunks from its throat until it went limp and fell at his feat.

He finds a target and, with another booming blast, the mana-infused bullet tears through the air and blasts through the zombie, staggering it. Where did those abominations come from?"
You are all a little distance outside the village, and no one is eager to leave thier homes just yet. After a few moments though, there is signs of stirring, and the Driver emerges from the house he was hiding in. He moves to check his team, which was put aside, then turns, waiting for you all to walk back to him....what, your the heroes.
Kojot slows down to a walk, then shrugs and starts to mosey back to the driver, keeping an eye out for further trouble.
"Off," Remethaer calls, pulling the dog back to heel as he lowers his rifle. "No one bleeding out?" He wonders, moving further from the town to check on Vennan and the sith'makar, glancing at the fallen corpses as he passes.
The corpses appear to be common peasants bodies, though each shows remarkable preservation. They obviously werent dug up, they were killed and then animated. The clothes are in mostly good shape, but show signs of wear and tear from travel. The cloaks are in good condition, so someone must have ment to conceal their true nature until they got close to whomever they were to attack.
Ferawyn walks her way over towards Sebropert and touches a wand to his scales. "I'm tending to the ones who are wounded." She then looks to Sebropert. "I'm sorry I didn't trust your instincts."
Sebropert does not yet return to the town, his big frame kneeling down next to one of the now still bodies. The Sith'Makar breaths heavily, wincing a bit at the tender spots the Zombie's strong strikes had left on his body. A clawed hand reached down to shift amidst the cloak of the zombie, his snout snuffling as he searched and scented for clues. "Not know well," he replied to Ferawyn in understanding. "Know now for future."
Nothing of note is on the bodies, beyond the clothing that keeps them from showing thier decay. The only thing is, beyond the wounds you made, there are no other wounds, nothing to show how they originally died. Perhaps it was magic.
"Undead. No doubt about it. I've encountered these before." Vennan says with a scowl as he tries to clean the filth from his blade before returning it to his belt. "A necromancer of some sort may be afoot. Or fouler influences still." Ferawyn says, "My first guess would be a necromancer." She says moving to heal Venna's injuries. "Perhaps we can find it.""
The driver remains back in the village, as you inspect the bodies he moves to check his horses, starting to unhook them from the wagon, apparently he is not traveling any more today, doubtful the horses could take it.
Remethaer nods, looking down at one of the dead for a moment. A sigh and he shoulders the rifle, balancing it as he turns to walk back towards town. The dog falls in behind him. "We should see the bodies back into the care of the Mourners. Let the proper rites be observed." Now to find out about this Mort, fellow, and why the driver and his lady-friend were targeted.
The driver tells his tale, that as he was heading to the village he was stopped in the middle of the road. A man in black armor with a cloak had these five behind him. The armored man demanded that I turn over everything of value and I would be given a painless death. Mort was my wifes brother, he wasn't the brightest fellow, and he moved to grab for a large hammer he carried, and the armored man spoke a few words. Mort went riged and fell off the wagon, and thats when those five came and tore into him. I snapped the whip and ran for it, the Armored man laughed and then the five gave chase.
