  • Summary: Hired by the Guild of Adventurers, to retrieve something for a noble.

The Adventurer's Guild called you all together as they were contacted by a nobleman who needs a couple things retrieved from his manor house in the country. There were not many details given, just that the manor had been left in a hurry and some necessary papers were left behind in a safe. He would like you to retrieve the safe. The guild has all the details, the location of the manor, description of the safe, even a wagon available to help get the safe back once you get there and retrieve it. They advise caution, though as the noble is paying well, he was strangely unavailable for any specific details of why the manor was abandoned. So those that chose to go find themselves on the road to the manor. The main road has just been turned off and its a smaller one that leads from there to the manor itself that you are now on. The wagon and its driver stops there, and lets you know to come get him when you are ready to go. The manor should just be up the road.

Josselyn sights down her crossbow at the manor before returning the well polished wood and steel weapon to her shoulder. "Alright, smash and grab job! Almost feels illegal really, should double check that when we get back." she notes wryly.

<OOC> Raniq says, "Can I learn any more clues at this point with successful Knowledge/nobility or Knowledge/local checks?" <OOC> Zyla says, "you can try"

"Alright, Clive." Begins Lenore, "You just hang back and keep that blaster handy. I'll get up in there and... stall them." Who's them? "If there's things to stall. Look, no matter what happens, don't come after me, right? That poncho of yours can only take so much more abuse." The woman sits in the wagon, idly swaying with it, grin growing on her lips as she gives the golem beside her a pat on the shoulder, before her attentions turn to Joss and she gives a shallow nod of her head.

"You got it. My body is ready."

Raniq looks ahead along the path.

Krom treks on foot, still baffled by thsi southlander habit of being carried everywhere. "Krom wonder why house abandon. Krom guessing something unplesant. Ghosts? Monsters? Krom think we find out soon enough."

You paged Raniq with 'the noble's family was known for its fortune in alchemy practices in the past though no decent alchemists in the last few decades.' You paged Lenore with 'the name matches up to whom is supposed to own this manor, and it was in the news lately, something about having been driven off the property.'

Virton *tinks* his way up the smaller road towards the manor, after getting off the wagon. The mechanised cowboy gives a nod at Lenore, "Alright, partner." He offers in return to her, before absent mindedly patting the poncho that covers his upper torso. Not for any sense of hiding anything to be dignified, as his skin is metal and his body is generally asexual - but it's a pretty bright coloured poncho, even if now it has a few torn holes and stains and.. It's pretty tattered, sadly.

"Tell ya what, partner. Iffin' there'll be a bit of a fight, ah'll give you a dose a' the good ol' Reos-branded energizer. Makes it tougher fer them folks ta' hit you."

An absent-minded pat at the thunderbelcher draped under the poncho, and Josselyn and Krom are rewarded with the hiss of pistons as the Golem gives a small shrug of his shoulders. "I dunno, them rich folks be mighty odd."

"Name matches up to who's supposed to be here, mind you." Lenore allows in addendum, "Think I remember reading something about it in the news, somethin' about being driven off the property. For what it's worth, I do think it's his property."

As a look of sudden realization dawns upon his face, the young nobleman Raniq says, "Oh, yes. The family of this manor have been renowned for generations in the science of alchemy."

Krom nods. "Krom think Guild would not assign job if transparently illegal. Krom also think Guild not send strong warriors if not expecting trouble."

Josselyn nods to Lenore "Yeah now that you mention something, I think I saw that too... perhaps it was flesh eating fairies..." she holds up her fingers at her mouth like teeth. "... massive teeth they use to gnaw flesh from bone in seconds."

<OOC> Raniq says, "How much further is the manor? And how clear or obstructed (by trees, for instance) is our approach?"

"Thankfully I ain't got none of them fleshy bits fer them fairies to be eatin'.." comes the buzzing mumble of Virton, who, probably by instruction of Lenore, is hanging at the back. A belch of black smoke escaping from the exhaust pipe sticking from the corner of his mouth in some sort of sighing exhale.

Krom blinks, looking to Josselyn in mild alarm. "You have those in the Southlands? Krom thought they were contained in the far north!"

You can see the Manor in the distance, so its probably about a mile up this road.

Raniq's ermine looks around, keeping a wary pair of eyes on the surroundings, and occasionally chittering in Raniq's ear.

"Maybe they will gnaw on you until you rust away to nothing?" Aya offers a casual alternative for Virton as she travels. Herbs, children, and now personal belongings. She begins to wonder whether others really value their property when they send others to find it for them.

Josselyn shrugs at Krom "Dunno, just heard stories about them the other day so why not? Could be anything inside of there, like Umber Hulks or Mind Flayers!" she notes cheerfully. "Only one way to find out!" she says beckoning the others to follow her towards the manor.

Raniq blanches at the mention of mind flayers, saying, "Gods forbid!"

"Maybe, ma'am. It'd be nice. I wouldn't wanna be the only one not bein gnaw'ed 'pon cause I don't got none flesh." states Virton, who seems to actually feel better about the whole thing. He continues *tink tink* walking along, right hand resting on the grip of the rather artificer-enhanced looking Thunderbelcher.

Krom shrugs. "Will find out soon. Krom sees house still stands. Cannot be too bad."

Following along with the golem cowboy, Lenore seems rather oblivious to her surroundings, humming to herself idly. Occasionally she interjects with an aside to Virton about a story this reminds her of; likely more tales of the amazing Clive Westwind.

Krom pauses, and frowns, turning a few times before focusing upwind. "Rot. Decay. Krom smell stench of something not fresh."

Raniq continues moving towards the manor house, along the path. He has a somewhat distracted emptiness on his face, enjoying the mild Spring weather, but then, sensing a shift in the mood of his familiar, refocuses.

Raniq asks Krom, "Can you tell where?"

"Welp, I guessin' that's why that there noble went an' did the things he did, an' now is payin' us folks to go an' get his things." offers Virton, as he casually brings the thunderbelcher up and into the grasp of both of his hands. He pauses for a moment to flick a switch, a single diode lighting up as it begins to give a gentle hum of power, purple electricity crackling down the strange firearm.

Aya's nose wrinkles and she nods her agreement. "Something rotten is not far away. Hopefully just spoiled meat or an animal carcass." She isn't so optimistic as her words, though, and remains wary.

Josselyn sniffs the air and nods to Aya, readying her crossbow with a bolt. "Perhaps undead it is, just zombies and skellies if were lucky."

As you continue towards the manor you can all smell it now. You can see it too, corpses of horses and cattle, sheep too, looking like they were tore into by wild animals or something.

Drawing her rapier to the ready, Lenore gives a few stylised swishes of the blade through the air, before following along after, lifting a bit of one of her sashes to cover her nose and mouth with her free hand. "Ah, see, there we are. Nothing to worry about!"

GAME: Raniq refreshes spells.

Raniq , sensing danger, casts a spell upon himself, incanting the magical phrase, "<something you don't understand in eldritch>". Immediately, the air around him shimmers for a moment.

GAME: Raniq casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 2 DC: 15

Krom grumbles midly, eyeing the corpses. Carefully, the northman approaches for a closer look.

Coming to a complete stop, Virton seems content to let the others go ahead and investigate. He simply holds his thunderbelcher at the ready, doing a slow revolution on his heels as he scans the area.

One random carcass would be happenstance. Two, coincidence. Possibly. Several IS something to worry about. Something(s) must be rather violent, hungry, or both. She attempts to move upwind of the rotting to cut down on the stench reaching her.

Raniq follows the fighter to check out the cadavers. He, too, inspects them.

Raniq shakes his head, and merely says, "Man... that looks awful."

Krom inspects the corpses a moment before stepping back, shaking his head. "Too rotted, Krom can tell nothing of use."

Raniq says, nervously, "Hey everbody, Something's coming... from over there!" pointing at the house.

Josselyn raises her crossbow "what and from where? What does it look like and how many teeth does it have?!" she says sighting down her weapon.

<OOC> Raniq will not attempt to close the distance between himself and the target beyond 110 feet, give or take, as his magic missile and force missiles cannot miss at that range, FYI.

Aya doesn't ask about direction nor teeth. Instead, she just follows Raniq's pointing to get a look for herself.

Lenore does the same.

Krom peers in the indicated direction, darwing his blades with absentminded ease.

You can all see it now. Three things are loping from he direction of the manor. They look roughly canine but are covered with a scaly skin that seems to be oozing fluids in different places, like weeping sores. THey are drooling and making barking like sounds. There are three of them.

Aya can now make out the incoming shapes. They're too far, at the moment, and she isn't about to make herself an isolated target for them. For now, she watches and waits.

Raniq points his right index finger at the lead beast saying, "<something you don't understand in eldritch>". A ball of force pings the hound.

The three hound things lope closer, much closer.

Watching the scaley beasts lurch closer, Virton casts an orange gaze over them before turning to regard Lenore. His right hand lifts up, the palm opening visibly as a small needle-like object extends. "<something you don't understand in eldritch>" intones the normally accent-driven Golem, as a pulse of magitechnical energy pours out, encompassing Lenore before solidifying into a solid shield of force.

"What's that you say? 'Much obliged', partner?" Lenore offers a lopsided grin to the war golem in the poncho, moving to put herself between him and the encroaching beasties, her sword raised and a gracefully poised striking stance taken, her free hand forward in aid of her balance. "You just watch my back, Clive. I'm counting on you." She's not willing to charge out at them alone, it appears, despite the magic now guarding her form.

Krom moves forward to place himself in harms way. That's what warriortypes do, right? Eyeing the rapidly approaching...things, the northman frowns. "Krom not know these beasts."

Aya NOW rushes forward at the lead and strikes it square in the snout, dropping it in mid-run.

The other two hounds circle around and each snap at Aya, one taking a nasty bite that oozes saliva and puss.

Raniq backs away from the fast approaching hounds, and fires off a force missile at another one of them.

<OOC> Virton says, "Are any of them close enough to AoO me?" <OOC> Zyla says, "nope" <OOC> Virton says, "Then I promptly take aim and fire off a death ray at the one that Josselyn was shooting at prior." GAME: Virton refreshes special ability pools. GAME: Virton spends ONE use of DEATH RAY. <OOC> Virton says, "Ranged touch attack." "That's right, partner. Much obliged." Virton replies to Lenore. As Raniq fires off a force bolt of energy at one of the hounds, the Golem's shoulder cannon pops up with a soft hum of energy and a hint of o-zone in the air. Hair begins to rise as the energy level of the cannon reaches its optimum, and the Golem brings both hands up to brace the weapon in place.

A buzz of a grunt escapes from the Artificer as the cannon discharges, an eye-searing bolt of red lightning searing from the cannon to impact into one of the lizard-hounds, leaving a welt and burn.

Josselyn deftly reloads and keeps firing her bolts in the flank of the lead target to take it down. "Keep the fire focused!" she calls out to the others. "Take it down quick."

Apparently Lenore has had enough of waiting -- even Clive is beating her to the punch! This won't do. With a bit of a skip, she's off and running at a decent clip, her rapier fwipped through the air a few times before she sinks that masterfully crafted blade right between the ribs of the scorched, mangled beast, felling it after the others did all the work. "Keep up the good work, ladies and gentlemen! We'll be through here in a hurry!" She slides the blade free, flicking off the blood before refocusing her attentions elsewhere.

Krom moves foreward, charging towards the remaining beast. His blade flashes in the light, drawing a long but shallow cut upon the monsters side.

Once again, Raniq widens the gap between himself and the last hound another 30 ft, and blasts it with a force missile.

The canine thing that was first dropped gets back up and attacks Aya, but misses, the other turn on Krom and takes a solid bite and knocks him to the ground.

With the death ray already out, Virton now has the chance to give it yet another stress test. There's an ominous hum that eminates from the weapon, as tubes that lead into it continue pumping distilled mana and essence into the magitechnical machine. As the hum reaches a teeth-grinding pitch, the weapon gives a violent discharge of red energy - that slams into the lizard hound attacking Krom.

"Hoo-ee! Dang gud shot. Dang."

Josselyn fires her next shot, securing a solid shot in the flanks but on the second, the crossbow comes up from loading aimed directly at the thing's skull. The squeeze of the trigger sends the solid steel tipped bolt directly through the eye of the beast and brings it down with a heavy thud.

The battle goes well for the would-be heroes, it seems, and Lenore is spurred on by the bravery of her new companions. She turns to assist Krom with a raise of her rapier in salute to the much larger fellow, before flicking the rapier downward and shoving it through its back, piercing all the way to the ground, not far from the tripped warrior. "Oh-ho-ho! Don't worry," She twists the tip in the dirt before yarding it free with a broad grin, "I know exACTly what I'm doing!" She lies, but she does it convincingly. "You alright?" A hand is extended, gloved as it is, as though to help him to his feet.

Krom sighs, and accepts the offered hand, standing. "Scratches, on body. But Krom ego may take longer to recover. Felled by dogs."

Virton comes wandering over, hauling up his Thunderbelcher as he does so, the shoulder cannon giving a low whine as it begins to return to its normal level of charge. Standing beside Lenore, he stares down at the lizard-dog, and gives a hum in the form of a deep buzz. He then hauls up the Thunderbelcher and fires a single giant slug into the creature's torso, leaving a wound. He then prods it with his boot.

"Thing's healin'. Anyone got any fire?"

Krom peers closely at the beasts, and sighs, nodding. "Fire. Krom has none that will burn, but has flint and steel. Krom can make fire, but not swiftly."

Josselyn shakes her head "I have no fire on me, someone start one maybe while we keep them down?" she offers as a suggestion. "I have a lot of bolts for it."

Raniq releases his pent-up force missile at one of the hounds, then comes closer to join the party.

Staring down at the hound, Virton mutters to himself in that low buzzing tone. His torso opens up, revealing his inner workings for a brief moment - glowing orbs and sparking circuits - as he grasps a small vial inside of himself. It's shoved against a port, and fills with a bubbling solution. As he draws his hand out, the torso snaps shut, and he promptly dumps it on the first corpse - setting it alight - and then repeating the process on the other two.

"I was gonna use that to start t'fire to star makin' beans tonight, dangit."

Josselyn reloads her crossbow again "Just be carefull going in, there may be more of them. Either way lets grab what we need and make our way." she notes scanning the windows and the doors of the house.

Lenore does her level best to keep the dogs down, by periodically stabbing into their bodies, making a bit of a face every time she does. Once the bodies are dealt with, presumably with fire, Lenore will start her way toward the house to locate the safe, opening the door and holding it for any that want to go first. "I'm sure that's all there was, right? There's nothin' in here, I bet." She hopes. Her smile is reassuring. Sorta.

Raniq tells Virton "Go ahead and save your serum. I'll ignite them by magic."

Krom mutters in annoyance, and eyes the house. "Krom wonder... dogs drive off nobel, or come later, after gone?"

You manage to keep them down until they are burning nice and good. You can tell they aren't healing anymore now that they are burning. The manor looms a couple hundred feet away.

Raniq pushes the dogs together then steps back and says, "<something you don't understand in eldritch>" releasing a stream of flame at their carcases.

As you get closer to the manor, you can see the doors open, there are more corpses here. It seems the hounds eat alot, or have been here a while. It is quite, almost too quiet but given those hounds, makes sense that there aren't any other nature noises.

Raniq walks in, trying to be stealthy, but he's a wizard, not a rogue.

Sauntering at the back of the group, Virton casually begins reloading his thunderbelcher. It looks like a semi-complex method, he's probably done SOMETHING to overcomplicate it in his tinkering, considering he's currently got a winding mechanism in there that's causing it to click quietly, a diode flickering and a soft 'hum' as a single tune has extended from his forearm and slotted into the side of the firearm, filling it with magitechnical essence.

Josselyn follows the other to look around but she keeps her crossbow trained on doors and windows for possible enemies "Yell if you find... well anything really."

Krom keeps quiet, but figures anything insde heard the battle. Cautiously, he enters the house, looking around for somethign that resembles the chest described to him. The place is a mess the hounds have ruined it pretty good with carcasses and offal all over the place, you manage to find the chest you are looking for though, eventually. Its not too heavy, the sort of thing one expects documents to be held in.

You manage to get the box and get back to the wagon. It takes a couple hours to make it back to town. You get to the guild and are met by the noble and guild representatives. The box is opened. Inside are the patents of nobility for his family as well as the papers that mark the land as belonging to his family. There is also some bags of gold inside which he promptly uses to pay you all for your services. Apparently the hounds arrived on the property and laid waste, forcing the family to flee, because they were more merchants and scholars than fighters. He thanks you all again and heads off with his papers.
