  • Place: Soldier's Defense
  • Time: July 2nd, 2022
  • Summary: Lysos is trying to find relief for 'a friend' when she bumps into a gobber skulking through the halls late at night. The gobber has a strange gift for someone in recovery. Zofija is there, too, and has some advice for Lysos' 'friend.' It turns out the arvek nar and goblin are not friends. Accusations are exchanged for warnings. Git is OK. Don't worry about him. Git's good.

It's late and the Defense is quiet, the halls all-but-empty. A few magicked torches issue a soft orange glow to keep the walkways dim. Windows are closed but not shuttered and the outside world's fog presses up firm against the fogged glass.

Hearth- and sunguards make their rounds on soft-soled shoes with a relax and steady purpose. A few sentinels stand silent vigil.

The Defense isn't busy with a recent plague or spreading infection. The sad truth of the undead invasion is that folk often suffer minor wounds or end up in a condition better suited to the Grey Halls, skipping the hospital entirely.

Lysos is at the Soldier's Defense not as a patient, but rather seeking.... advice. A consultation. She's cornered one of the Altheans.. not one of their clerics or paladins, but rather one of the less magical caregivers. "Look.. I'm just asking for a friend, alright? Right about... here..." She gestures under her left arm, near the bottom of her rib cage. "It's a rash that isn't going away. Do you think it might be serious?"

A plain-faced Althean looks dubiously from Lysos' flank to her face. "A friend." The gaze is steady and scrutinizing, a look that says 'this is easier if you're honest.' "Does it hurt when they touch it? Itch?" He reaches out and gingerly palpates the region indicated by the sorceress. Gauging her reaction to the touch, he offers the name of a root, ground into paste and applied twice daily. "If your 'friend' doesn't see an abatement in tenderness in a week they should come see us again."

And then he's off to do his work.

From the opposite end of the hall-- from the entryway-- comes a smaller figure. A gobber with a lighter shade of yellow-green skin and freckles, yellowed eyes, and lopsided head of greasy hair half-shaved. He wears a baggy, purple shirt under a black shoulder wrap and oversized gloves cover his fidgety hands. He's nosing around, poking at doors, and peering into gaps and around corners. The little interloper has what appears to be a wooden mannequin's arm under his own-- one too big for a goblin.

"No, seriously! It's for..." Lysos trails off as the Althean leaves off for more important work. Then she sighs, trying very hard not to scratch at her side through the corset of her dress as she looks around. The twist to do so has her spying the gobber.. when she does, she tilts her head, watching him, trying to decide if she ought to help him or not. Another glance shows the Althean is out of view. Scratch, scratch. "Hey! Looking for someone?"

"Maybe your friend's corset is too tight, or they need to clean it more often." An Arvek-nar who was nearby offered, who was taking a few bottles from one of the clerics. "If it's caused by that, then you should add some more padding underneath it, as well. "

"Sorry, couldn't help but hear." Zofi apologizes, scratching the back of her head.

Zofija looks over to the goblin, and narrows her eyes. "I recognize them, from a while back." She offers. "Yeah, are you looking for something here? if you need something, it's best to ask someone working here, and not look like you're looking where you shouldn't be."

The gobber flinches and holds up the limb like a club in one hand, poking pointer- and ringfinger out in somatic pose with the other. It might be an intimidating stance until the arm crooks at the elbow-joint and collapses down to *thunk* on his knuckles. He winces and shows his teeth, squeezing his eyes shut while trying to stay quiet. It's late.

The little man turns a tight circle hopping up and down, his shoes slapping on the wooden flooring. He stops and catches the arm between his knees, freeing up his hand to shake it out. "(hooooo.... owwwww....)" he whines through clenched teeth.

It takes a moment but he blinks the tears away and asks, "Kerry-Anne?" since Lysos offered.

"Also, shhhhh," he suggests, patting at the air.

Lysos certainly doesn't jump when Zofija talks to her. And if her sudden movement was a little bit jerky.. well.. she was in an awkward position. "Oh! Oh, well.. thank you. I'll make sure I tell my.. uh.. friend. That's good advice." She takes a small step back.. it isn't so much that Zofija is all that taller than her.. but she certainly outmasses her. Maybe it's intimidating! When the arvek looks to the goblin, Lysos looks away from her and back at the little man with the wooden arm. "Uh.. no? I'm Lysos."

<OOC> Zofija says, "Is this the necromancer?"
<OOC> Jinks says, "I don't know how good a look Zofi go through the grate but, yes. It's the same NPC. How well she recalls that interaciton is up to you."

"Well, you should be talking to the staff. There are a lot of people here who aren't in the best shape to react to someone sneaking around."

"Especially when you're wandering around with a blunt object like a detached wooden arm. So, why don't you tell us why you're here, and why you're looking for this Kerry-anne?" The Arvek-nar grunts.

The gobber frowns, noticing Zofija for the first time after his little pained dance. He extracts the arm from betwixt his legs and stomps over with one hand on his hip. The mannequin arm is used as an extension of his own, pointing up at the arvek nar's face. "You're a lousy cousin, cousin. And someone I don't need advice from," he adds, waggling the thing at her.

"I'm trying not to bother people who're helping other people get better. I don't leave people trapped in basements that need help and send the gendarmes to arrest them and put them in jail for two months and take away their best friend and kick them out of the Academy..!" He catches himself as his voice continues to rise, looking away and issuing a frustrated "HMPH" after swallowing his top lip. He's not crying; he has something in his eye.

"Mama Bula sent me. I have a gift for Kerry-Anne." The little guy is looking at Lysos now. He holds up the arm. It has straps and buckles at the 'shoulder.'

Lysos's eyes widen a little bit at the accusations the gobber is levying. She turns to look at Zofija. "Is he talking about you? Did you leave him trapped?" She looks back at the little man, getting a better look at the arm now.. and then he name-drops. Her lips form an 'ooh' as she nods. "The survivor," she says. "Well, that's very kind. I think we can find her for you. You should know, though, I think Mama Bula isn't really an orphanage matron. I think she's a crime boss."

Zofija stops, and her gaze hardens. "You lost the right to call me family in any form when you would disturb the bodies and souls of the deceased. The only poor cousin here is you." The Arvek-nar grunts. "You knew the risks with what you were doing, and you should have known why not to try it."

"Yes, left him with a limbless zombie he created, to get the guard to deal with it."

"You're lucky it was only two months. If you were in Blar, you would have been executed on the spot for messing around with undead because of what they did to us."

The wizard wrinkles his nose and frowns, looking away from Lysos to glare at Zofija. He opens his mouth and bites back the comment he was ready to make. Yellow eyes turn back to the sorceress and dart to the knight. One can almost hear his teeth grinding.

"I--" and then he points at the arvek nar. "I want to be able to stop the risen! My brothers got eaten when the Blue Bitch caused all the problems and the Charnish snuck in!" His lower lip has screwed up and he's fighting to stay angry without crying in frustration. It's not a battle the gobber is winning. "They only let you do theory at the Academy..."

There's a choked sob and the little man stomps his feet. He squints his eyes shut and turns blindly back towards Lysos. "I'm not sad or scared. I'm very mad! They took Ratto." His shoulders tremble and he makes a fist. "Please take me to Kerry-Anne."

There's a long, wet sniff and he uses the mannequin arm to wipe his nose. "Mama isn't a crime boss; she's a good person and she's helping us."

Lysos hold up her hands, palms forward, patting the air in a placating manner.. her eyes all but saying 'ooookaaaay'. "This.. this might be something the two of you should talk out. Another time. Come on. I'll show you to your friend," she tells the gobber. "What's your name, anyways?" She halt turns, halting the turn as she looks at Zofija. "Maybe you should come too. Might help if you saw his friend. She's not in a good way, either."

<OOC> Zofija says, "can I roll knowledge/local to figure out what they mean by the blue bitch?"
<OOC> Jinks says, "Sure. Kn.History would work, too."
GAME: Zofija rolls knowledge/local: (4)+8: 12
<OOC> Jinks says, "Hard times hit Alexandria in 1015. Rumors were that the Cannibal Queen (or Blue Bitch) was a sort of Bogeyman that stirred up problems."

The arvek-nar stops, and grunts. "Look, I get what you mean. People close to you were lost because of something out of your control. But if you want to do the right thing, you need to do it the right way." Zofija states. "There's a reason you only learn theory in the academies. Because it's dangerous, and it's not right to mess with the bodies of those already in the gray halls, it can cause all sorts of problems."

"If you want to stop the risen, then you do it without necromancy. You work to prove that you aren't going to try again, until you gain back the trust you broke with them. And then you focus your studies to help without resorting to such things."

"Yeah, maybe we should talk it out another time. I'll come with you if you need, especially if they're not doing well."

The gobber just snorts and throws his shoulders in a disaffected shrug. He wipes his face roughly and tries to put on a tough guy frown that's spoiled by the red-rimmed sadness in his eyes.

"I'm Git," the would-be necromancer tells Lysos after clearing his throat. "Kerry-Anne isn't my friend; she's someone else Mama is helping. Mama asked me to drop this off for her since she's been helping to find me a tutor." He falls into step with the sorceress. "Tamzin knows Kerry-Anne. Knew her from before. So I guess Kerry-Anne is going to be my friend, too..." After some consideration, the gobber seems OK with this conclusion.

Lysos gives a small, satisfied nod as her smile returns. She takes a moment to consider, one hand on her chin while the other scratches idly at her side again.. then nods, leading the way. Seems she's already been to see the girl at least once before. "Should warn you.. Kerry-Anne was.. well, all of her friends died. Who knows what she saw.. but she saw ghosts. And a flying half-body. And undead giants. Might have seen some of her friends get eaten. So.. just, you know. Be ready for that."

"And this mama is finding you a tutor? A tutor for what?" Zofija asks with one brow raised, but otherwise following Lysos' direction. "If you're getting into magic again, I hope you aren't. That would just make things worse for you, and, probably wouldn't be good."

Zofija sighs. "It helps to have friends. Just make sure you're a good influence on them, and they're a good influence on you."

"Sound serious, Lysos. and a lot to recover from. Clerics can do so much for wounds, but the mind's a lot more difficult."

"Mama Bula agrees that I'm supposed to be a wizard." Git responds, turning to frown up at Zofija. "'And right now someone who knows how to fight the undead is worth a dozen invokers of equal aptitude.'" The gobber sounds like he's parroting something said to him. "Don't worry; I won't get caught doing something I'm not supposed to."

Then they're at the hall for those that need peace and relaxation more than medical care. Kerry-Anne is in one of the beds about halfway down, likely asleep. An ancient lucht woman is on hand for any immediate needs but she's currently dozing at her post.

"Kerry-Anne's dad is a bastard and ran her husband out of the city," Git explains, looking between Zofija and Lysos. "Tamzin was picking pockets and stealing food off carts to survive. Mama Bula is looking out for us when everyone else just wants to step on us or kick us aside." He's hugging the arm to his chest now and daring either woman to argue with him on the matter.

"I'm going to go sit with Kerry-Anne and wait for her to wake up so I can tell her Mama B's worried and give her her present. You can go now."

And then the little gobber wizard turns and pads past the other alcoves to sit and wait at the one-armed girl's bedside.

"'Everyone' is a whole lot of people, Git," Lysos points out as the gobber moves to sit at Kerry-Anne's bed. "I mean, this is the first time we've ever met... and I don't remember stepping on you." She looks from him to the sleeping woman. "Kerry-Anne trusted Mama Bula too. Look where that got her. Look where that got her friends." Then she sighs. "I hope your friend likes her new arm." Then she touches Zofija's arm, turns, and quietly leaves the gobber to his waiting.

Zofija stops in the room, and she crosses her arms when she hears what Git had to say. "You do realize that would make you a rogue wizard, right?" The arvek-nar grunts. "And why does she care if you're a wizard? If she did care, she wouldn't be pushing you to go against the law like that."

"Look, I know I didn't help. But you've got a second chance, don't go throwing it away in a rush."

"I'm going to go, but I'm going to tell the people here that you came by. Please just think things through. If you want to be a wizard, you need to temper your knowledge with reason."
