If I wind up skipping you we'll pick you back up when you return. Don't take that poorly. I don't mean anything by it." <OOC> Jex thinks that he is ready. <OOC> Rogun says, "Okay. I'll open shortly." In the western edge of Alexandria a clarion call goes out... ...the call is picked up deeper into the city and then re-played Onward and forward until it can be heard all throughout the city. The populace immediately shifts and talk of 'the Arena' burns its way like wildfire through the lower- class districts. Within hours the seats are nearly filled. The conversation is a dull roar. The trumpets sound again, and all goes quiet.. In the box at the center of things a garishly dressed figure steps outward and begins to speak his voice echoing through the coliseum, "This afternoon for the delight of those gathered we have recruited - for your entertainment - six individuals who have agreed to partake in a scene from the Third War of Algenon. Whereupon the armies of Thane Lofriek did battle against the murderous Lizardfolk in Snowbarrow Pass..." -=FADE IN=- Hastily recruited by the adventurer's guild the six of you volunteered to take part in combat in the arena. When you took the job it was billed as 'fun for the whole family' with 'minimal danger' but as the garishly dressed man goes on and on about the casualties on both sides you cannot help but wonder if this seems to be a bit more than you bargained for. ..wonder no more, for the gate barring you from the arena opens and the thunderous cheer of thousands of people urge you into a second caged holding area. You were told at this point you could make and 'preparations' you desired and that this second holding area would open when it was time for things to begin. <OOC> Rogun says, "You may now declare preparations and roll perception." GAME: Tak rolls perception: (16)+7: 23 GAME: Gunnhilde rolls perception: (10)+5: 15 GAME: Jex rolls perception: (11)+7: 18 GAME: Brom rolls perception: (17)+8: 25 GAME: Nadara rolls Perception: (18)+5: 23 GAME: Eligar rolls perception: (20)+10: 30 <OOC> Tak says, "I think I will cast expiditous retreat on myself to increase my movement" GAME: Tak casts Expeditious Retreat. Danger? Danger is Brom's middle name! Well, technically it's probably something incomprehensibly dwarven, but close enough! He grins widely, cleans his monocle, and hoists up his beloved musket. "Yar! Let's show them how true hunters do historical recreation!" Tak grins, taking a moment to chant some arcane words and then touch his chest. He hops a bit as he adjusts to the increased speed, and then readies his whip. "I think this should be fun, I'm always interested in entertaining the crowds." Come now. One can hardly deny that the arena is a place for hte clerics of Rada, can they? A brisk trade in sport and blood is their nature! The yellow eyed goblin is present, ready to go herself. Happily ready, actually. "Right, then. Let's make it a good showe!" Cheerful ton in her shrill voice. Gunnhilde makes sure her dagger and handaxe are in place, but chooses to leave behind her bow. This done, she ensures her armor's straps are snug and tight, then draws her falchion from its sheath, running her thumb along its edge to check for nicks and dings. Jex was not as interested in the fun for all ages as the oportunity to test his devices in a controlled, yet realistic environment. The stated safety mechanisms in effect are another added benefit. It verifies the ready state of both of the long weapons in its possession. "What are the criteria for a positive display?" It looks to the others with curiosity. Eligar comes riding out in the arena on his horse. He looks around the Arena and at all the people in there. He has had his lance repaired and he's got his shield up and ready. He nods to those that are also in the Arena with him, "Good day." <OOC> Tak says, "Hrm, I guess I could roll knowledge/history and see if anything special pops up about the event we are re-creating" <OOC> Rogun says, "Sure!" GAME: Tak rolls 1d20+4: (1)+4: 5 <OOC> Rogun says, "Abraham Lincoln's role in history revolved around vampire hunting." <OOC> Rogun says, "No other preparations? Then we continue." "..and they met within the wastes of Snowbarrow pass.." As the showmaster continues to spin his tale you would no doubt survey what lies before you. The arena has been configured to be approximately one hundred feet across. Thirty feet forward from where you are now help chest-high walls made to appear as snow-laden rock formations. Then there is an open space and more chest-high walls - presumably for your competition. "..and so for your viewing pleasure I present to you the royal guard of the Lizard King who will now battle Thane Lofriek's guard.." The sound of a giant crank can be heard and the floor beneath your rumbles. From your position it is at first unclear what is occurring but then you finally realize that there is no cage on the opposite side of the arena and something is being brought up from below. Five massive writhing snake-like heads come into view first. Their eyes a murderous red as they twist and contort about one another in a vicious rage. Then it is clear that these giant serpentine heads are connected to a much larger body which stamps and tramps as if frustrated for its position. Then, about this creature, appears the tops of Lizardfolk heads. There are four of them all together. Once is dressed in leather and wields a bow. A pair are in garish robes that might seem to be a costume. The third is a wall-of-a- Lizardfolk in heavy plate and with a massive greatsword. "THE BATTLE OF ALGENON PASS!" The cage before you drops into the floor.. ..before you can even act the mass of snake-like heads flow as one frenzied creature and heft the wall-of-a-lizardfolk into the air and immediately rip him into four distinct pieces which they shake like a mad dog might a stray cat. The crowd LOVES IT. They go berserk. Some of you might have a bad feeling about this. <OOC> Rogun says, "And, +init." You can attempt to cut off the heads to slow down its healing/number of attacks but if you don't apply acid or fire two more heads will grow in their place (eventually) making its number of attacks and healing even more fierce.' You paged Tak with 'You're pretty sure that, if someone can weather the crazy number of attacks, if you hack its body up enough you can kill it outright.' Tak grimaces "A hydra, fun times, we need acid of fire or the thing will just grow more heads on us. If anyone can do that, we need teamwork. The black-robed lizard seems panicked when his comrade is suddenly lifted into the air and torn apart. He moves away from the Hydra and towards the cover on his side of the field. The creature casts a spell and suddenly becomes indistinct and blurry. <OOC> Rogun says, "Eligar." <OOC> Eligar says, "I'll charge the closest lizard" <OOC> Eligar says, "If I can I'll try to ride by him and keep 5 ft away, so I can use my reach weapon." <OOC> Rogun says, "You may charge the White-Lizard (who is the side-most and not behind cover) in this manner but the length of the field means you can't move far past the cluster. Though you will be 'at reach' of that particular lizard." "Rada! Bless us in our efforts to reproduce one *heck* of a battle," says Nadara, cheerfully, staring across the battle field. Lizards? No problem. Multi-headed lizards? NO PROBLEM. Rada will seal the deal and everyone profits. She's thrilled. <OOC> Eligar says, "Can I ride past in such a way to set up a charge for next round?" <OOC> Rogun says, "They're eighty feet away. He takes aim at the White lizard and he charges after the blessing has been given. Eligar's horse, Kindroth, kicks up dirt as the horse runs across the arena. Eligar slams his lance into the white lizard and does some good damage before he rides past him. Hurling the remains of the armored lizard aside the Hydra stomps its feet and one head turns to watch the retreat of the black-lizard. Meanwhile the center most head cranes downward at the leather-lizard and the other three follow Eligar's charge. Its slavering jaws open at once and in concordance they both pivot round and bring their murderous eyes to bear upon the sole Knight. It takes the massive beast and its long serpentine heads only a single step to bring itself within range. The heads frenzy downward and begin rending Eligar apart only one of the heads fails to get a bite. ===== Current Initiative Order ========= ---------------------------------------- 21 Nadara ---------------------------------------- 21 Black-Lizard ---------------------------------------- 20 Eligar ---------------------------------------- 19 Hydra ---------------------------------------- 18 White-Lizard ---------------------------------------- 12 Brom ---------------------------------------- 9 Gunnhilde ---------------------------------------- 9 Jex ---------------------------------------- 6 Leather-Lizard ---------------------------------------- 5 Tak ---------------------------------------- ======================================== GAME: Rogun rolls 1d6: (5): 5 The White-Lizard is struck by a mighty blow as the Knight passes. As the wave of hydra heads fall it runs away and towards the cover opposite the black-lizard. It seems to focus for a moment and its wounds begin to mend a bit. <OOC> Rogun says, "Brom." <OOC> Brom says, "Which closest to me, and how far is it?" <OOC> Rogun says, "The black and white lizards are fifty feet away now. "Yaaaaaargh!" Brom shouts and charges forward, a terrifying dwarven battle cry. It'd be pretty fearsome and impressive, except that he follows it up with firing uselessly into a wall with zero effect. <OOC> Rogun says, "Okay. It will take you both actions to get to the wall and to sort out whats stuck within." <OOC> Rogun says, "Is this okay?" <OOC> Gunnhilde says, "fine by me." <OOC> Rogun says, "Within your wall you find: A container labeled 'Acid', A container labeled 'Healing', A container labeled 'MYSTERY', and several fore-arm length sticks that are reminiscent of standard torches." ===== Current Initiative Order ========= ---------------------------------------- 21 Nadara ---------------------------------------- 21 Black-Lizard ---------------------------------------- 20 Eligar ---------------------------------------- 19 Hydra ---------------------------------------- 18 White-Lizard ---------------------------------------- 12 Brom ---------------------------------------- 9 Gunnhilde ---------------------------------------- 9 Jex ---------------------------------------- 6 Leather-Lizard ---------------------------------------- 5 Tak ---------------------------------------- ======================================== <OOC> Rogun says, "Jex." Gunnhilde trots forward, towards the nearest of the rock-piles. There, she crouches and digs through, trying to find what it was that Eligar was speaking about. "I have supplies here that can help!", she calls back to the others. "We need to get our rider back here, quickly!" Jex reacts to the statement of the hydra. It exchanges one weapon for another, carefully stowing the former. "I possess fire and acid as weapons. When a head is removed, I will use one or the other." Afterwards, it becomes confused when most attack the lizards. A switch is activated and its armor empowers itself from the energy within. <OOC> Jex switches weapons and activates Titan Armor. <OOC> Rogun says, "Sounds good." Gunnhilde pages: the containers... they're like potion vials? or they're like boxes with vials /in/ them? You paged Gunnhilde with 'Like potions.' The leather lizard hisses something aloud though the message is not carried very far for all the noise in the arena. It quickly knocks an arrow and rushes to where the white-lizard has positioned itself. It seems to survey its ally before rising from cover loosing an arrow at the approaching dwarf. The missile just misses him. <OOC> Rogun says, "Tak." <OOC> Tak says, "How far is the closest lizard to me? And NOT within reach of the hydra" <OOC> Rogun says, "All three lizards are fifty feet away at the chest-high-walls. The black-lizard (who is blurry and indistinct) is at one barrier. The other two are at another. There's about a twenty foot space between the barriers so it would take them that much movement to get from one to the others. Yours are positioned the same way." <OOC> Gunnhilde says, "Ugh. Net's burping on me." <OOC> Tak says, "And the hydra is how far behind the barriers?" <OOC> Rogun says, "About thirty-five feet." <OOC> Tak says, "Going to use Perform, and then move 40 to be within 10 feet of the lizards at the barrier." Gunnhilde has connected. <OOC> Rogun says, "Sounds good." Tak grimaces as Eligar goes down quick, then begins to speak in his magical bardic voice! "Do not fear, this is a minor setback. We must take down the little ones while staying out of reach of the hydra, then we can focus on it without distraction!" He starts moving forward, his enhanced magical speed making him sprint across the field easily. <OOC> Tak says, "Everyone gets +1 to hit and damage, competence bonus, so it stacks with bless. And +1 save vs fear/charm, but thats morale and wont stack with bless" <OOC> Gunnhilde grumbles. "My net's being shitty. I miss anything since I found those potions?" <OOC> Rogun says, "TOP OF THE ROUND" <OOC> Rogun says, "Nadara." <OOC> Nadara is checking a rule. <OOC> Gunnhilde sighs. "If my net bounces me off again, I'm just gonna call it quits, guys. I'm sorry." <OOC> Nadara says, "Okay. :)" <OOC> Nadara says, "I'll scurry up after the others." <OOC> Nadara says, "I'll slap a Shield of Faith on Gunnhilde if she's within reach." <OOC> Gunnhilde says, "Honestly? With how my net's acting up, don't waste it on me." <OOC> Rogun says, "If she drops out you can designate someone else. Eligar manages to down a potion with a single head darting in as if drawn to the action but missing him as the body starts to lumber away. Not otherwise threatened the massive beast starts to move away from the Knight whom the four other heads have dismissed in the wake of the flashing brightness. As it moves away Eligar catches it in the hind-quarters which then causes two heads to snap angrily back around. As the arena-magic deflects Nadara's shields onto Eligar. Gunnhilde signals her withdrawal and is immediately teleported away. "Should I continue to wait or assist with the lizard beings?" Quick thinking and rapid adjustment doesn't appear to be its strong suit. The crowd is going berserk. As the Hydra handily devours the white-lizard the leather-lizard draws itself from behind cover and rushes to join the black-lizard. They seem to be having a very heated conversation as the leather-lizard knocks and looses another arrow - this time at Tak. The arrow misses. <OOC> Rogun says, "The leather-lizard has moved to where the black-lizard is. Two of them begin fighting with one another while the three others take hunks of flesh from the divine hero. <OOC> Rogun says, "Not in 20' as you've just move forward 20', I believe." <OOC> Brom says, "Alright. Going to at least move 20' in the right direction, shoot leather-lizard, hope for the best." <OOC> Rogun says, "Okay. You move at an angle into the center of the arena. Working your way around." <OOC> Rogun says, "Fire at will." GAME: Brom rolls ranged + 2: (4)+6+2: 12 <OOC> Brom says, "That's against touch AC, if it helps." <OOC> Rogun says, "Miss." <OOC> Rogun says, "Jex." This has not been Brom's finest display of hunting prowess. The musket is fired again, and the shot just ends up spraying the wall uselessly once more. "There was a lot of inaccurate shooting in the real battle!" He attempts to shout over the din. "I am providing valuable realism and historical accuracy!" <OOC> Jex can't continue to wait forever and decides to take a pot shot at the hydra. <OOC> Rogun says, "With what weapon?" <OOC> Jex says, "Death Ray. Range is 40ish feet to hydra?" <OOC> Rogun says, "Hydra is 60ish as I do not think you have moved." <OOC> Jex moves up before firing then. Why not. <OOC> Rogun says, "Then yes. Depending on how far you move. :)" <OOC> Jex moves up his move and fires as soon as he can do the math on bonuses and penalties. <OOC> Rogun says, "Sure. :)" From afar, Jex sorries for delaying things. "You are in danger, you should move back!" Jex warns Narah after she becomes a snack for the hydra. Jex moves nearer to the creature and lifts its weapon. A whir and bzzt follow and it launches a blob of acid at the many-headed creature that splats and sizzles. As Eligar rides past skewering the black-lizard the archer rises from his position and quickly looks at the positioning of those present. He grimaces at where the Hydra stands and shifts to the far-end of the barrier away from Eligar. It fires an arrow at him and strikes him as he turns Endroth around. <OOC> Rogun says, "Tak." <OOC> Tak says, "How many lizards left?" <OOC> Rogun says, "Black Lizard is very badly hurt. The leather lizard is in good shape." <OOC> Tak says, "I'll shoot the black lizard with an arrow. Tak knocks an arrow, drawing it back and taking aim at the blurry lizard. The arrow is released and while the hit isn't vital in and of itself, its enough to cause him a bit more wounds to deal with. <OOC> Rogun says, "Top of the round. The Black-Lizard cast invisibility and vanished. As Nadara rolls for channeling what is your move?" <OOC> Nadara says, "I'll move 20. Make it easier for him to charge to me to help me out." <OOC> Eligar says, "Who's more threatening to Nadara? Lizard folk or hydra?" <OOC> Rogun says, "The Hydra would seem the most obviously threatening." <OOC> Eligar says, "I'll ride by charge attack it." GAME: Rogun damaged Eligar for -11 points. 28 remaining. GAME: Rogun damaged Nadara for -11 points. 25 remaining. Another pulse of healing enerfy eminates from Nadara. GAME: Eligar rolls 1d20+13: (6)+13: 19 <OOC> Rogun says, "As the Hydra is near the other barrier you would wind up roughly like you did against the black-lizard. It shifts its massive bulk four of its five heads following the gobber-girl until Eligar charges through. When struck its heads writhe in agony and it howls in rage turning to chase after him. The crowd leaps to their feet cheering at the Knight's return. The leviathan covers the distance in only a few steps and the heads begin to fight amongst one another such that none of them are able to make a clear attack. <OOC> Rogun says, "Brom." <OOC> Brom says, "How large a move would it take to get me to leather-lizard? Also, do I have a clear lane to charge now?" <OOC> Rogun says, "Yes. The lizard moved to avoid Eligar. So he is now exposed to you." <OOC> Rogun says, "And you can charge." <OOC> Brom does so! Switching to earthbreaker and charging. GAME: Brom rolls melee + 4: (16)+3+4: 23 <OOC> Rogun says, "Hit." GAME: Brom rolls 2d6 + 1: (8)+1: 9 <OOC> Rogun says, "Decent damage. The Hydra body is starting to look pretty wounded - despite the continuous healing." Brom finally gives up on getting anything useful out of his gun on this one. GAME: Rogun rolls 1d20+4: (2)+4: 6 The thunder of the crowd can be heard for miles as Brom charges in and meets the archer head on. The leather-lizard discards its bow and pulls out the longsword it had sheathed drawing even greater cheers from the crowd as it attacks the hunter head-on. Still dazed from the blow of the earthshaker it swings wildly and misses. <OOC> Rogun says, "Tak." <OOC> Tak says, "I start a new performance, no movement for now" <OOC> Rogun says, "Okay." ===== Current Initiative Order ========= ---------------------------------------- 21 Nadara ---------------------------------------- 21 Black-Lizard ---------------------------------------- 20 Eligar ---------------------------------------- 19 Hydra ---------------------------------------- 12 Brom ---------------------------------------- 9 Jex ---------------------------------------- 6 Leather-Lizard ---------------------------------------- 5 Tak ---------------------------------------- ======================================== <OOC> Rogun says, "Top of the round. GAME: Eligar rolls 2d8+9: (10)+9: 19 <OOC> Rogun says, "Skewered." Eligar ignores the roaring of the crowd as the knight defeats the Hydra. The time for acolades will be after the last enemy is defeated. He has Kindroth turn towards the last lizard that he can see and the horse once more sets off into a charge. Eligar leans forward in his stirrups as he readies his lance as he comes upon the lizardman. He skewers him with the lance and then wheels around, "There is one more and he is hiding." Five heads rear into the air emitting a deathly bellow as the final blow lands upon the might Hydra. As the mighty creature falls defeated a rhythmic pounding comes from the stands as tens of thousands of beat stomp in unison causing the entire arena to shudder. From there its just a matter of mopping up the rest of them. Hopelessly surrounded the final act against the leather-lizard is much akin to running up the score.. ..when he falls the black-lizard appears at the edge of the arena and immediately submits.. ..and is teleported away.. "Citizens of Alexandria - the Champions of this afternoon. The mighty warriors of Algenon; the guard of Thane Lofreik!" The crowd cheers wildly and the brass trumpets sound their clarion call. The sound is picked up further in the city and it sounds all about the wall until the entire city knows that the battle is complete. Five stand where there were six. Flowers and gifts are showered upon them and, for the rest of the day, the city is theirs.. -=FADE OUT=-
