- Summary: The Valethor gang, minus Delilah and plus Sirri and Illiria, are seeking Veren's hideout underneath Alexandria. They are exploring a giant cistern in a tiny boat when a colossal cube of jelly falls from the ceiling, destroying the boat. They managed to disembark just in time, and start a fighting retreat. The fighting and the retreat are ... fine. They're fine. They don't seem to be hurting the cube, or able to get far from it, when another falls from the ceiling, then another. Donna is punching craters as everyone seeks the way out - and one is found! Beneath one of the cubes. A lightning bolt barely shifts it, but does move it enough that Donna can hook the manhole cover free. Hopefully they will get down the drain before it is plugged again.

To reverse the boat and get out of the way, there is not time. Not nearly enough time. There's only barely enough time for everyone to bail out of the small vessel -- Donna, Ashes, and Sirri out one side, and Elyanna with Illiara out the other -- in a sudden panicked burst. And then, the thing lands.
A gigantic mass, around thirty feet tall, lands in the center of the boat with an ear-splitting crash that echoes through the cistern, snapping the mast and smashing the gunwales to splinters.
Thirty feet to a side; an imposing cube, mostly transparent and filled with bones, skulls, bits of armor, coins, and various other bits of detritus, now sits on top of the boat. The wood isn't so much destroyed, as it's starting to pop and hiss as it turns black.
ShitshitshitshitSHIIIIIT!"
Not exactly a war-cry to unnerve the hardiest of foes, but a logical reaction to having almost thirty thousand cubic feet of ravenous dessert whistling through the air toward your head. There's no time to make sure *anyone* else is okay before Donna catapults over the side to safety, but as she levers herself up from the shallow water, she's *extremely relieved* that there are no fresh skeletons around the base of the thing.
"...Boat's gone," she says. Perhaps a unnecessary observation, but, naming a thing makes it a real problem to solve, and not something that blind denial can wish away.
The explosion clearly must have messed up her ears.
Her eyes....
But, somehow, Elyanna missed the enormous mass that decides to detach from the ceiling.
Thankfully, she doesn't miss the call of alarm, and any reflexes toward escorting her fellow travelers out of the boat are preempted by anyone even near her already well into abandoning ship as she starts moving.
She finds herself fleetingly wondering if she jinxed herself by mentioning swimming, breaking the surface of the water to see what just dashed their pleasure cruise.
Upon sight of the behemoth, what else can the flabbergasted noble intone but the most reasonable question:"What... the.... fuuuuuuuuck....?" <goblin-talk>
The parasol is a bad idea. Diving for safety is a better one. Donna's movement prompts Ashes to follow and she bails out over the side, aiming for some dry, or dry-ish surface.
The boat is gone, crushed and dissolving beneath the creature. And inside it, things that done easily dissolve.
"We don't want to be touched by that." Ashes is moving back as she speaks.
Now
The cube is in the middle of everyone. Donna, Ashes and Sirri on one side, Elyanna and Illiria on the other. It mooshed the boat, everyone barely had time to get out. The passengers reflexes were so good they avoided being under the cube.

"We really don't wanna be here," Donna says, drawing herself up. "Ash, I hope y'got more o' those spells on hand." Dwaring in a deep breath, she clenches gauntletted fist, pale-blue fire bursting from her eyes and showing runic markings on her arms. Her outline blurs through magic and sheer speed, and an eyeblink later half a dozen copies of the rawler surround her. "Oi! HORSEMEAT! FUCK OFF, WILL YOU."
Shifting herself to, perhaps fruitlessly, place herself between the cube and the gnome, Donna loops a fist out to slam against the side of the cube.
It wibbles a bit.
This will require a lot of punching.
Sirri's eyes have gone wide. The gnome pulls her goggles off, and the light they give flickers out, as she lets Donna muscle in in front of her. The gnome takes a step back, and ulps audibly. "Uhm, that's a... that's... that's...."
She sucks in a deep breath. "That is a really big gelatinous cube and it will completely eat us and we should probably run for it RIGHT NOW because clearing the cistern of cubes is not our job!" she gasps in a rush, her voice turning into a squeak by the end.

Shaking off the sheer... head-tilting grandness of their predicament, Elyanna twists in the water and, with hasty hands, tries to encourage their new companion to back away from the block of biohazard.
Gagging and spitting an errant splash of water out of her mouth, the Keeper turns back once there is opening distance, and she flicks a gesture and exhalts a forceful breath worthy of one who comes from the land of the ice and snow...
...but aside from a subtle ripple in the air 'twixt her open mouth and the suddenly wibbling cube, there is no indication of any sound.
GAME: Ashes casts Prayer. Caster Level: 12 DC: 17
"Back up." Ashlee says, in monotone, putting an arm out to encourage Sirri to move with her. Louder, she calls across to the others, "Illiria, Elyanna, back up."
The Mourner is fumbling with her satchel, and touches the holy symbol on her breastplate, "Feiu of the Tears, tilt your scales for us."
There's a burst of charnel energy, suffusing and surrounding all, grey whisps clinging to weapons and lingering around each person.
<OOC> Delilah says, "The cube is going to try to... slap Donna." GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+4: (8)+4: 12
The Cube is big. The Cube is imposing. The Cube is *right there* in the middle of everything, with the boat still hissing and popping underneath of it. The sail is already gone, and the wode is buckling from both the weight of the Cube, and the acid. For the moment, the Cube doesn't actually move, particularly; it weathers the assault from Donna, and the scream from Elyanna, without either having appeared to really... do, overly much.
But then, it's a big.. cube. Of goop. How would you really even know if you'd hurt it, anyway?
Apparently whatever force it is that drives the Cube has selected Donna as... either the most immediate threat, or perhaps the most nutritious available target. A tendril lashes out from the side facing Donna; a big, thick tentacle, that tries to flatten the brawler, but just goes to her side.
And for the moment, that seems to be it.
"What... What *is* that?!" Illiara needs little urging from Elyanna; the mermaid thrashes her tail to get to the edge of the scant amount of water in the cistern, and drags herself up onto the stony floor. She pushes with her tail and drags herself with both hands, moving away from the cube as rapidly as she can manage. "It's horrible! This thing is awful! How in the Holy Waters do you fight this?!"
There is a stream running basicaly through the middle of the cistern, with barely enough draft for the shallow boat to navigate. It's now full of cube.

"CUBE!" Donna roars, fists lashing out and playing a rapid, syncopated beat onto the titanic wall of Cube jelly. "BIGGEST ONE I SEEN. BETTER OFF GETTIN AWAY, BUT SOMETHIN'S GOTTA KEEP ITS ATTENTION. So, *GIT GOIN!* I CAN CATCH UP."
"I'M GOING I'M GOING!!" Sirri straps her goggles back on, and starts running, heading in the direction that they had been sailing until moments earlier. Gnomes aren't known for their sprinting ability, it should be said, but Sirri is managing to put up a pretty reasonable pace.
She's... motivated.

Getting closer to shore, and realizing Illiara is somewhat at a disadvantage in the shallows, Elyanna twists the mermaid's way and scoops her up in her arms with a firm, "Hold onto me!" and she edges back further from the altercation.
She begins a low, throaty rumble that carries a steady, if ominous melody before she lifts her voice openly to the ceiling and let's rip.
Her song is doubtless another of her dire marches, but they seem to do the trick. This one, calls to mind the language she berated the ogre with, bellowing a different balance of timbre and resonance than her other, more Hob-worthy fare.
- "We come into the world and take our chances"
- "Fate is just the weight of circumstances"

"There might be more." Ashlee calls after Sirri, as she dashes of into the darkness. She pulls her light crossbow out of her haversack. Carbuncle is clinging to the barrel, down the end at the cross with the string.
"I need it." She tells him, and the white lizard scurries up the weapon and then vanishes into her sleeve. Clothing twitches betray his path up to her chest. Instead of drawing the weapon, the ashen Arvec stares at the cube, her eyes glinting.
Her brow furrows as she thinks dark thoughts, about her upbringing, about the things her foster mother would say. Curses, easily cast, flowing freely. It will have a hard time hitting her friend.
"You will need our help if it engulfs you," Ashlee tells Donna, unwilling to leave her far behind.
GAME: Donna rolls reflex: (7)+8: 15 GAME: Ashes rolls reflex: (9)+5+1: 15
The Cube receives the pummeling from Donna as she buys time for Ashes, Elyanna, and their companions to escape, and... a few blobs of goop get pummeled loose and splatter on the floor, and a skull schlorps its way out of the side of the think to splash into the stream that the Cube is currently damming up, but it remains hard to tell just how much damage is really being inflicted.
At this moment, one might wonder; just how does one of these things get around? The question is swiftly answered as the entire thing lurches forwards, and leans out overtop of Ashes and Donna; both of whom find themselves with just barely enough time to get out of the way as the thing comes crashing down on the space where they'd just been standing.
As the Cube settles from its impact, there comes a faint whistling, followed by another almighty crash nearby; off to the side, about forty feet away from Donna and Ashes on their side of the Cube where they are standing, another one of the six-sided creatures has just landed.
There are now two Cubes on the cistern floor.
Elyanna says, "Anyone else feel like we just rolled snake eyes?"
Donna will punch a crater into each one to make it real.
Illiria is scooped up by Elyanna, and throws an arm around her neck, the other clinging tightly to her shoulder. "Make haste, my hero!" she implores. "I--" she pauses as the ground shakes, and looks over Elyanna's shoulder, to see what lies behind the Hobkin. "Run! I mean it, run! There's TWO OF THEM NOW!"
The new battlefield conditions. Both cubes are behind Sirri, who has run off towards the far exist of the cistern. There is one cube literally right in Donna's face, as it almost landed on her. The second is roughly forty feet away. Currently, there's a clear path between Donna and Sirri.
No one is out of threat range, the cubes or colossal. A withdrawal would be safe, but anything else the cubes likely would react to it. Book it.
Just book it.
They need to be in the cistern more than they need to murder a god's leftover brulee. Holing up in an evil lair might be an idea too.
Things with no brains might forget the party exists. It could happen.
"...Yeah okay true, than--FUCK!" Such a rude jelly, trying to fall upon the ladies as they're trying to run support for each other. "CAN YOU NOT?!"
And then the seismic thud of a *second* cube making literal landfall, and her asperity becomes a streak of foul language sufficient to make sailors weep in despair. "CHANGE OF PLANS," she shouts, shooing Ash ahead of her as she turns to pelt away from this madness. "WE HAVE MORE IMPORTANT SHIT TO WORRY ABOUT. FEETS UP AND FEETS DOWN, Y'ALL."
Not much more to say about it; Sirri is beating feet like there's no tomorrow. "I'M GOING I'M GOING!" she yells, and indeed she's making as much haste as a gnome can make. When the Cube lands she loses a little time, thanks to the thunderous impact making her lose her footing at a critical moment.
"Wait," she gasps. "WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CISTERN. IS THAT BAD?!"
Wait, is Donna suggesting-?
Really?
Elyanna looks down to the damselfish in her arms as she is again mislabeled by the well meaning soul. There is a smarting there, a depth of guilt beyond measure, and the stern songstress nearly blows a note under the weight of it. Then, a new resolve.
Alright.
- "Why are we here?"
- "Because we're here"
- "Roll the bones"
- "Roll the bones"
As her war march doesn't quite have enough Robin in it to transition into a full on withdrawal, she lets the notes linger as she starts to tear off with Illiara after Valethor.
Later, for thwarting the sinister flans.
Ashes is in the process of cocking her crossbow when Donna calls retreat. This is an order worth obeying, especially as she's already jumped back from the cube that was rolling over on her. "Okay."
She backs away, turns and runs, withdrawing after Sirri, clutching her crossbow to her chest.
GAME: Delilah rolls 1d20+8: (13)+8: 21 (Sirri reflex) GAME: Elyanna rolls reflex+3: (18)+10+3: 31 (+3 Charmed life, 2 of 3)
Getting out of range of the Cubes might be a wise idea; and it turns out, that humanoids on legs are much faster than gigantic cubes, whose only means of locomotion is literally just throwing themselves forwards. Donna and Ashes outpace the two Cubes behind them relatively quickly, as haste is made to catch up with the others.
Elyanna and Sirri, with Illiria in the Keeper's arms, have just enough time to draw up short as they hear a loud whistling from above them; and with a thunderous crash a cube comes down on the Cistern floor, right in front of them. So close, in fact, that Sirri is windmilling her arms as she draws up short, all while emitting a high-pitched scream.
Illiria is hanging on for dear life while Elyanna runs.
<OOC> Donna says, "Could I end that in a Charge to reorient the cube's attention?" <OOC> Donna says, "Noting that this is the final round of Elyanna's song." <OOC> Delilah says, "How would you use a charge to reorient the Cube's attention?" <OOC> Donna says, "By punching it so it's not thinking about sashimi." "Gods-damned gold plated assnugget tatterdemalion..."
Every one of Donna's footsteps continues her swearing; oddly enough, in the cadence set by Elyanna's battle march. Some songs just stick around in the head, after all...
As the *third* cube drops, Donna's eyes widen and her mouth shuts. Instead, she pours on the speed, winding up as she closes with the cube. "Need light an' need a door! *Someone* find at least onea those things!" Finally as she gets within range, her spike-plated fist loops out and down, crashing upon the giant jelly. "RESIST AND BITE, MOTHER*FUCKERS!*"
The jelly wibbles.
Sirri is busy shrieking and waving her arms in the air, "THIS IS WORSE!" she screams, "THIS IS WORSE THAN THE FISHERMAN!!"
"I agree!" replies Illiria, "We have to get out of here!"
Sirri backpedals from the Cube, and runs the short distance to where Donna is busy... punching another cube, because that's apparently what you do. The Gnome runs around behind the brawler and then jumps, grabbing a handful of backpack and hauling herself up to cling on to Donna's back.
"Hope you don't mind," she gasps. "Cisterns usually have sub-passageways," she yells, "If we can find one -- or just... run for the exit, with... Cubes dropping on us?!"
There is loads of room to either side of the cube. There's just... a cube right in Elyanna's face.
GAME: Elyanna rolls perception: (1)+8: 9 (EPIC FAIL)
The red woman's face falls flat as she's forced to brake her stride with the significantly sploopy arrival of the third challenge. It's a bit of effort to overcome the inertia of herself and the other woman, and the hobkin spends a bare moment looking about for any of these alleged sub-passageways but comes up empty.
She glances to Illiara a moment, then glances back to try and lay eyes on Ashes before she breaks into an em-burdened run around to one side of the gluttonous gelatin, "I do not see one!" she cries between breathes.
GAME: Ashes casts Light. Caster Level: 12 DC: 14
"Feiu of the Tears, I need some light." Ashlee says, still clanking along in her heavy cavalry boots. They are keeping out the wet, this is good. She touches her holy symbol, and then one of the bolts for her crossbow. It glows coldly, shedding as much light as a torch.
Illuminating the cistern, but there still isn't much to see.
The Mourner's head turns to see how Elyanna is managing with two passengers now. She has spells that can help, and as usual, not enough time to use them. "Is this better?"
She takes a look around also, and keeps moving.
GAME: Donna rolls reflex: (12)+8: 20
The two cubes that the heroes have left behind are still pitching their way forwards, far enough away that they're not going to be a threat in the next eight seconds, but close enough that their mindless drive to pick up anything that moves and digest it is rather... uncomfortable.
It's the cube right in front of Donna that's a concern. Elyanna has managed to carry Illiria and run right out of it's immediate threat zone, but Donna finds herself having to backpedal to where she's standing almost next to Ashes. The club lands with a loud thump, and looks like it's preparing to do so again.
There's no sound from it, either, aside from the noises a big squishy cube naturally makes when flopping about. It doesn't roar or howl or make threats.
It just wants to eat you.
Illiria clutches tight to Elyanna, every time there's a cube moving nearby. She gasps, and looks over her shoulder, craning her neck uncomfortably to make sure Donna and Sirri and Ashes are alright, and breathing a sigh of relief when they are.
"I don't think I have any spells that help, just now," she admits. "I am sorry! I am of little help, and you're just having to carry me around. I pray we can escape this terror!"
GAME: Donna rolls perception: (14)+13: 27
There's a manhole cover. The third cube is currently on top of it.
"FOUND IT," Donna shouts, shifting back and rubbing her palms together. The pale blue flames sheathing her fists grow blood-red with the motion, and she draws in a deep breath. "There's a way down, but this goopy sonuvabitch is *right on top of it.* Gonna try an' fix that!"
GAME: Donna casts Scorching Ray. Caster Level: 9 DC: 14 GAME: Donna rolls ranged+1+2: (12)+13+1+2: 28 GAME: Donna rolls ranged+1+2: (2)+13+1+2: 18 GAME: Donna rolls 4d6+1: (9)+1: 10 GAME: Donna rolls 4d6+1: (13)+1: 14
Two beams of fire sink into the cube.
The red woman's course is accompanied by heavy splooshy treads of her boots as she carries the mermaid around the perilous polygon, venturing on a gamble as Donna cuts loose.
Taking a deep breath, Elyanna renews her song, certainly an easier task if she could sound some percussion to help the beat, but one must work with what one has.
Resist and bite, indeed.
<OOC> Ashes says, "shoot the one on the cover then" GAME: Ashes casts Lightning Bolt. Caster Level: 12 DC: 17 GAME: Ashes rolls 10d6: (35): 35
The Mourner is trying to catch up with Elyanna when there's another cube. Finally an exit is identified... underneath one of the cubes. They're surrounded, in a triangle pattern, with her and Donna in the middle, making it practically impossible to line up more than one.
"Feiu of the Tears, make them go away." Ashlee prays, touching her holy symbol. Around her the air crackles, small sparks form on her clothes, and little arcs trace along her crossbow. It's not really the focus but she uses it like one, raising the barrel and pointing at the cube covering the hatch.
The air charges around her, and a halo of sparks converge and leap from the crossbow across the cistern directly into the cube.

GAME: Donna rolls reflex: (9)+8: 17 GAME: Elyanna rolls reflex: (6)+10: 16 GAME: Ashes rolls reflex+1: (19)+5+1: 25 (+1 prayer)
The first couple of cubes are starting to catch up; the triangle that Donna, Sirri, and Ashes are occupying is... shrinking. It's getting a lot smaller, in fact, as one of the cubes catches up and tries to land itself on Ashes. She gets out of the way expertly, but there's less room to maneuver now.
The one Donna is facing tries a likewise trick, pitching itself towards her, hardly slowed by either fire blasts or lightning; the latter of which doesn't seem to hurt the cube in any particular way, other than that it heats up a bunch of the metal suspended inside of it. And that hurts.
Elyanna, once again, finds herself forced to move rapidly as a by now familiar high-pitched whistling signals the arrival of another cube from above; she has to backpedal rapidly to avoid getting squashed by it as it lands, with another ground-shaking impact.
The manhole cover is now exposed... but there are two cubes within range of it, and two more trying to trap Donna and Ashes.
Illiria points towards the manhole cover, "Look! It's free!! Ashes and Donna got it to move off of it!" And that's all she has time for, before Elyanna has to move to avoid the cube. She flinches at the sudden impact, and her tail jerks as she tightens her muscles, half expecting to be squashed.
"Let's get out of here," she pleads. "Please, be careful!"
The manhole is visible, on the other side of the gelly cube from Ashes and Donna. There's a path to it, around the cube.

"Okay, Sirri," Donna says through clenched teeth, frustrated. "Gonna try somethin' stupid. Hang on." Hopping twice on the balls of her feet, she weaves around the cube, keeping a worrisome lack of distance between her and the monster, then skids to a stop out on the open.
Rearing back one arm, she shouts a short, brain-twisting incantation, and *reaches.*
And reaches.
And reaches.
And manages to grab hold of the manhole cover, then jerks her shoulder back with a furious yell.
Her rubbery arm snaps backward, taking the slab of metal with it and flipping it far back, leaving the exit open.
