- Characters: Skielstregar, Vaera
- Place: Outside Mictlan
- Time: March 20th, 2022
- Summary: Skielstregar returns to his shared campsite after some time in Alexandria proper. Vaera greets him warmly and welcomes him home. She gets to meet his newfound steed, as well as learn of what is going on with all the strange dreams and problems going on in the city. They get a bit sappy, and Skiel gives her a gift- a piece of jewlery that reminds him of her before they work on the tea that was brewing.
- Camp Outside Mictlan, Midday
After much snow and ice, finally, the green of spring had begun to push through. The air a comfortable warmth, but still held a chill in the shade. The campsite that held the home for a silver and redscaled makari had been absent of its muscly counterpart. He'd been in the city proper to help with the dream issues people have been having, he himself providing aid to the Temple of Eluna for the past few days.
Unlike lumbering steps before, there's the steady yet brisk pace of horse hooves approaching.
The stop before the bend. There's some jangling of someone dismounting. And then familiar lumbering steps start to slowly draw up to the campsite. A pack over his shoulder and a tired, harried, stressed expression on his visage and scent. His familiar halberd hangs over his shoulder behind him, though now the blade seems... eternally marked by his signature ichor. And ink doesn't stop slowly dripping from it, only to fade away as it splashes against whatever.
"Vaermiir?" he calls out, some of his worries abating with just the name.
Any lingering snow was obliterated by the wards that took over the forest of Mictlan, for some time until Skielstregar reached the area of the camp, edges marked by the log fence that had been made over the course of several months. Though before He could get further, there was a flurry of movement as a large lizard leapt over the fencing, coming face to face with the warrior. Wyrmere was the size of a horse now, if not taller, and after a curious look the swiftclaw nudges the makari with their snout, attempting to knock him over in the process.
"Skielstregar! You're welcome to surprise me with your presence you know, but it is good to hear you regardless." The familiar voice of the hunter calls out from within the camp.
Skielstregar had known that Wyrmere had grown quite a lot over the past few weeks. But it was still surprising when that green scaled monster leapt over the log fence and approached him quickly. The man was about to say something to break his surprise, but the nudge easily tumbles him over. "Ack!"
Clatter.
He gently laughs, a rumble of a sound. "Good to see you too," he hums, getting up to a knee the roughly scratch the swiftsclaw under the chin with his talons.
He clears his throat to speak back, "Normally this one would, but they loathe surprises at the present."
He pats the swift claw. "You're good though," he excuses, getting to his feet and ambling in slowly in search of Vaera.
The large swiftclaw rumbles something that sounds vaguely like laughter, and bites the front of the warrior's armor to help pull him back to his feet, before giving him another nudge and running off. It seemed he was forgiven.
Inside the camp was the area that had become their home, the large tent set up, and portable lean-to's that stored much of their belongings. The fire was out, and the hunter was off from the main area, sitting on a stump turned stool as she cleaned the inside of a deerhide.
Or was cleaning, as the moment she saw Skielstregar entering she looked up, and waved to him, leaving her seat. Her leg was removed and set off to the side, and the red makari had a cloth wrapped around her waist. "It is good to see you, Skielstregar. You were in the city for some time, I was beginning to grow a bit concerned."
Skiel watches the swiftclaw run off, amusement crossing him for a brief moment as being back in the camp set him at ease. He ambles in, slowing some as he catches the redscale working. He blatantly stares.
A sigh leaves him, and with it, a good chunk of his worries in the frozen plume cloud. "Hello, Vaermiir," he warmly greets, dropping his bag at the entrance to stride up towards her and swoops the one legged woman in an embrace. "This one apologizes," he rumbles, nuzzling into into neck. "There was... quite a lot of issues this one had to help with, and was apart of without realizing it."
Latent anxiety poured off of him, as well as fatigue, and some relief.
Vaera stops, chuffs, and stretches out for a moment, wobbling just a bit on the singular foot before she can hop to close the last bit of distance and hug Skielstregar back, holding the back of his head and rumbling happily. "No need to apologize, things happen. This one is just glad to see you back and alright." The redscale states. "And this one knows you like helping people, and are a boon to others."
Skielstregar pulls her close and tight. Keeping her stable, yet basically melting onto her. The anxiety of the past few days melting away as he revels in the embrace. "... thank you," he says quietly after a long moment, him pulling away slightly to nudge his snout against hers.
He looks slightly different. Perhaps the luster in his eyes was more vacant than usual? And the halberd he usually has: the blade leaks a familiar black ichor near constantly. "This one has been doing just that. There was... a werewolf outbreak in the city for a bit. This one had to.. fight them. It was..."
He looks away. "... a terrifying remembrance seeing people change like that..."
"You are most welcome, Skielstregar." Vaera chuffs, returning the bump to his snout after holding the hug as tight as she could manage. Though when Skielstregar spoke and continued, the red makari sighed, and brought her hand to the side of his face when he looked away, pulling it back to her neck as she rested her head against his. "You need rest. And time to relax, you have dealt with much for some time." She continues, rubbing the side of his face gently. "This one can understand how hard that would be, especially for you. If you need speak more of it, this one will always be here to listen to whatever you need. Should I boil some water, to prepare some tea? It may not go amiss."
The silverscale's head is pulled back easily, if just for the redscale. Another sigh, and a nod. "You are right. This one needs rest for certain. This one missed you," he intones, nuzzling his cheek into her hand. "Tea sounds nice..."
He gives one more squeeze, then carefully pulls away, offering to lead her back to where she needs to go so she didn't have to hop about.
A beat. He dry swallows. "... this one... would like to speak of some things."
A horse whinnies in the distance.
He cringes.
Vaera hops off to the fire, crouching down, and she quickly has it going again with a few strikes of flint on steel before she can stand back up, and lean against an arm to return to her seat. "And this one missed you as well. I will get some water boiling in just a moment." The red makari chuffs. "I offered to listen, and I will. So speak as you will."
She does stop to cant her head to the source of the noise however. "You purchased a horse?"
After he helps her around, the man gives an anxious sigh. "Erm... no. Um. This one has... um. This one thinks the Dragonfather was listening one day. And isn't sure if they were hearing this one. It was a nice, bright day out. But then this one's... erm, magics started acting up like they do sometimes. They tried to quell it. But it just swelled forth and..."
Horse hooves clop towards the camp. Their sound echoing and hollow.
"... well, if this one was a Sunblade, they think they would have been bequeathed a mare."
Stopping just at the front of the camp is a pausing sight. A raven black haired horse with solid crimson eyes looks into the camp. Wisps of black follow in the wake of its hoof falls, only to vanish away. The bit, bridle, and saddle all are of similar hue.
"This is... Voarexautha."
The horse sputters and shakes its head.
"Rest, Skielstregar." Vaera chuffs. "You are back, things are well here. This one has an excellent lap." She jokest softly, attempting to pull the silver makari into a seat so she could wrap her arms back around him.
"This one remembers you speaking of that before. Your magics, they are unpredictable, yes? But not evil."
The makari stops and looks to the horse that was there, looking up and down. "It is good to meet you then, Voarexautha. Your god has gifted you with an excellent companion, it seems."
Skielstregar quietly chuckles at the joke as he settles in next to her so he could be swaddled in redscale arms. He relaxes a touch. "... yes, they are not... not evil. This one is trying to remember that."
He glances over to the red-eyed horse, them uncannily still watching the two. It chuffs once in greeting.
The man rubs his neck. "... perhaps. This one... thinks maybe Voarex was a gift from Him that got filtered through this one's affliction. But it is... a welcome boon." He looks over to the mare. "Thank you for bringing this one here. You can go now."
He slowly waves a hand through the air, and a black pool coalceses in front of Voarexautha. It whinnies once, shaking their head and striding forward into it. They sink down. Down. Down. Gone.
And the pool >pops< away like any other of his spells. He shudders. "They are useful to get from the city to here. This one... discovered them on the way there."
"You are not, and this one will remind you as many times as it takes." Vaera chuffs, pulling the silver makari close so she could prop her chin on one of his shoulders, a singular yellow eye keeping watch of him. "You are getting a better handle of things it seems. Perhaps he thought you worthy enough to handle such a thing now."
"And a useful boon, as well. Between Wyrmere and Voarexautha, it will be no problem at all for us both to go into town when the need arises."
The silverscale softly laughs, him nudging his head against hers as she rests on one of his shoulders. His eyes close. "Yes, this one is. Maybe he thought so. Though just this is getting more... comfortable? With the magics. It's not as... unsetting to use."
He grins some. "Yes. Voarex stays around for nearly half a day, which is plenty of time to ride from here to the city. Though due to the... magics in the city, this one cannot summon them forth there."
The man pulls off his halberd, the constant black ichor dripping off of it splashes against the ground as he settles it aginst the wooden wall. "This one also has... learned some more magics. Or, figured them out. May prove useful."
"Yes, I noticed something like that." Vaera chuffs. "I was not going to point out the fact that it looks like your polearm is is infused with magic."
"But you have learned other magics? That is good, if you feel them safe to use. I still worry about using them needlessly. I do not wish you hurt from using them too much, after all."
Skiel looks to the weapon, and rubs his neck. "Yes, someone from the Mage'sUniversity place was able to imbue this one's weapon with some of their... affliction. It is more... unsettling, now. Perhaps fights will end sooner."
That uneasy feeling around Skielstregar when he is changed seems to emanate from it.
He gives a little sigh, and nods. "This one believes it is safe to used. You said it yourself, not all of this... magic is bad. This one is just... getting used to it. Some capabilities to stay safer and move around easier."
He glances off to where the swiftclaw ran off to. "And yourself. Do not think this one hasn't taken note of your own progress..." he warmly mentions, giving Vaera and light squeeze.
"Anything to keep you and others safe." Vaera chuffs, squeezing the silverscale in her arms a touch. "As long as it is safe for you I mean. I do not wish to see harm come to you, Skiel."
"I have been trying, at least. It is difficult to keep up with you, what with only having one leg after all." The hunter chuckles as she reluctantly leaves her seat to hop over to where the water was kept so she could fill the simple kettle they kept, and hang it over the fire as it caught. Stopping to stretch again, and bending over slowly to tend to the fire, tail swishing behind her. "Wyrmere is the one with the most growth, And it is more so regaining a semblance of what I was capable of before."
Skiel nods. "This one does not want harm to come to them either. As of late, the... transformation has become so much more... controlled. In a way. It feels less wild. Perhaps Tawyse was right; letting loose has helped quite a lot."
He rumbles a chuckle, though he lifts himself up halfway before sitting back down. "You can affix yourself to Wyrmere and catch up quickly," he jokes. "Besides, this one thinks you are plenty capable even if... if..."
He stares.
He coughs into a fist, looking away. "... erm. Words. How do they work..."
"Perhaps it is true. But this one will worry, it is just how this one is." The red makari sighs as she returns to her foot, turning to see Skielstregar. The hunter stops, and barks in laughter, before she hops back over to where the seat is, so she can sit back down. "They do not work sometimes, when you are so easy to tease, Skiel." She chuffs, wrapping her arm around the silverscale again. "And it makes this one happy to take your words."
Skiel rubs his neck as his mate laughs, him clearly caught. "This one thanks you for your concern..." he mumbles as she hops back over.
Then he's wrapped back in an arm, the silverscane nestling in. "... this one finds you... erm... well... they needn't elaborate why you take the words away from them."
Dead silver eyes glance to her. "... but this one tends to have difficulty with finding such words with you."
Vaera pulls Skielstregar closer, and she rubs the side of his head with her other hand.
"You need not, you make it abundantly clear." Vaera chuckles again. "It makes this one happy, truly. And? This one is beyond happy to see you accepting of yourself, and your feelings. Even if not for myself, this one is happy to see you able to accept your emotions and the like."
"There is more to growth than just strength and aptitude. It is as important, this one feels."
Skiel pushes his head into the head, him intoning softly in that rumble, "This one has to be in line with their feelings, else... things get out of sorts with the Affliction. And yes, this one understands completely. Raw strength only gets one so far."
He watches her for a moment, then down some before he lightly sighs and starts to work on removing his breastplate. "Best this one matches you."
As he works, he looks about the space. "... this one was wondering if we should host some softskins here? This one has been to Shaman Ravenstongue and Telamon's house. Perhaps we could invite them here? It is a bit out of the way... and... this one doesn't... know what we should do to entertain them..."
"It can get one very far, yes. But there are some things it can not do." Vaera chuffs. "And you have a lot of strength, which this one would never downplay."
Vaera looks up, and seems to smile almost, as she rests her hand underneath the breastplate. "Yes, that would be best." The makari chuckles. "You do not need your armor here. And with the fire burning, this one can see how your scales are doing after your injury. And enjoy them too, of course."
The thought of entertaining others makes the red makari tilt her head in thought, before she nods. "That would be good, to entertain others here. They would be welcome for certain, though this one does not know them overly well. But what to do if they were here? That is simpler. We could make a grander meal, perhaps roast a boar or something else similar. We could share tales, or think of something else to do, depending on what they enjoy?" Vaera offers.
Skiel pauses for a beat as the hand rests against him. He rumbles a chuckle. "No, it is a boon for certain."
He removes the armor, as the rest of the pieces until he was in just his usual tunic and pants. And after a moment, the shirt is pulled off as well, making the campsite glimmer and sparkle from how shiny the scales underneath were. Still he had some scars on his chest, especially the one over his heart, but over all, he was doing just fine. "... there, enjoy them at your whim," he quietly teases.
That thought makes him nod. "A hearty meal, some stories to share, and perhaps a comfortable place for them to lay their head. And or, whatever else they come up with. This one knows them decently well, though we have gone many a trip with them. It seems like the nice thing to do."
Vaera watches unabashedly as Skiel removes the armor and Tunic, and she quietly chuffs. "There is much to enjoy, yes." She quips back, before turning and resting the back of her head in his lap, so she could look up and stick her tongue out for a moment. "I am glad you are healed from that blow, I was worried when I heard from your sister what happened."
"That does sound nice, Skielstregar. I will see if I can hunt some boar for that, and gather other things from the forest for it. It is kind of you to think of them so, and you are right, it is good to give thanks to the allies you rely upon. Though, this one will need to go and get a tent for them to stay in, if that is the case."
Skiel, if could blush, would be as he looks down at his lap. Which was... occupied by a redscale now. He huffs some, sending a tiny plume of visibly frigid air to flood against her. "You can enjoy the rest of it later," he manages to riposte, stealing a glance to their shared tent before shaking his head. He rests a large hand atop her head, and gently strokes along the top of it. "Yes, this one is glad. And this one is glad their sister is such a talented shaman to help reverse it. Worry not, Vaermiir. The Celestial Mother is strong with Seyardu."
He gives a little shrug. "They are much smaller than us, this one's old tent should suffice."
The red makari seems to shiver from the gout of cold air, which seemed to be a joke more than anything, as she pulled herself closer to Skielstregar's chest. Though the hunter was caught off guard from the returned comment, and she chuckles quietly. "Fair enough. This one will look forward to it."
She closes her eyes, and pushes her head into the hand gently. "This one is glad, it makes this one feel better, knowing the jobs you and this one go on. That will work then, we can set the tent up and prepare it for them, so they can stay if they wish. Having more around the camp will be nice, as much as this one enjoys having you all to themselves here."
".... as does this one." Skiel looks away and coughs into a fist. Though, it didn't stop the rumble in his chest, which only grew louder as Vaera drew close.
He too closes his eyes, half holding Vaera and petting her. "You do realize that also applies to you? This one quite enjoys ha-" The silverscale was not one to speak his mind on the matter so openly, hence he realizes how much he was about to say, and he fumbles more. "... you know... erm... words."
Words. How does one.. oh! "This one, um, this one apparently has quite strong silver blood, they learned. Um, this one can chill their just their breath."
Vaera rumbles happily as well, which reverbrates against the leg she was resting over, and Skielstregar's chest. She does open her eyes to look up and chuckle, bumping her snout against Silver scales as she chuffs, a much more warm gout of air from the redscale. "You are adorable when you get so flustered, Skielstregar." Vaera teases. "Is that so? You are blessed by the empress, it seems. Though, it may be hard to prove. What with the warmth you make this one feel, and how their heart races around you. That being said, the cold from you is always refreshing."
Skiel half lids his gaze to flick it downwards, only for it to slide off and away. "Well... you make this one like this..." he mumbles before his shoulders square in pride. "Yes! Perhaps so! It is a welcome thing. This one has always been able to make frigid air, but never to such a chilling degree--"
He blinks, then looks right down at Vaera. Maw opens, then clicks shut.
"... keep this up, and we are skipping tea."
"It is a good thing." Vaera chuffs, letting her eyes close again as she chuckles. "No, we are not skipping tea. As much as this one enjoys working you up, they are just happy to spend time with you. And you still need to rest and relax beforehand, this one has seen your eyes."
"So, this once can enjoy your lap for while we wait."
"And what an excellent place to relax in the meantime. Though perhaps this one should offer their own instead?"
Skielstregar huffs. "... this one enjoys spending time with you as well, in any capacity," he intones before reaching down and easily scooping Vaera up into his arms. He shifts over some to be closer to the fire, and sets her carefully back down.
"This one agrees. Yours instead," he snickers, shifting to lay down with his head in her lap once she gets situated.
He lets out a loft sigh, and nods slowly. "... yes, this one needs rest. And peace for a spell. This one has yet you ask... how have you been? We have not had time to just... share words."
Vaera opens her eyes and blinks as she is effortlessly lifted up, but she just chuckles and hugs close to the warrior until she is set down. She guides Skielstregar's head to her lap, where she holds it in her hands. "This one is happy to offer it to you, Skielstregar." the redscale chuffs, gently running a hand over the scales. "Though this one misses most of their leg, there is still enough for this, for which this one is glad."
"How this one has been? If it is not obvious from how things are, they are, quite well. The camp has been improving, Wyrmere's training goes well, and they were able to confess their feelings for the one they love, and see them returned."
"It is, this one never though their life would be so pleasant again. There is still concerns, but there always will be."
Skielstregar chuffs and closes his eyes as he enjoys the warm hands on his face. "Eh, even if that was the case, one leg is enough for a lap. But this is still... ssaa... nice."
He quietly nods along, listening as his tail faintly flicks to and fro beside him. Though he stills some. A slow exhale leaving his nose to give a trail of frigid air like chimney. "That is... really good. This one is glad they can... help you so."
He's quiet. Fidgeting with his hands in that manner that he does when he's trying to work out words. His mouth opens to say something, but it closes as the chimney stops for a moment.
"Th-... this one... this one loves you as well..." he says softly, turning in his spot to hug the redscale at the waist.
"It is really good. And yes, you helped this one, as this one helped you. Just as much." Vaera chuffs, leaning down to gently nudge their snout against his. Though she stops as he seems lost in his words, until he hugs them, which is returned readily. "Have I not said it More? I should. This one loves you, Skielstregar. It is true. This one is happy to say so openly, and have it returned."
Skielstregar shudders some as the embrace is returned. Him sniffling once. "It is... it had gone unsaid for some time, is all. Thank... thank you for accepting th- me."
A moment of warm, comfortable silence before a bout of laughter abruptly comes from the silverscale, him giving Vaera a squeeze before sitting upright.
"Bah, look at this one, not even ten minutes back home and already getting sappy!" he snickers, leaning against her.
Seems like he found his stride.
"This one thought it went without saying, Skiel." Vaera sighs, hugging the makari close after he sat up, and chuckling loudly herself. "They are sorry, it should have been said, and will be said more. "You were missed. This one is happy to see you again. And this one is not good with showing emotions, but, this one is likely Sappy, too."
Skiel shakes his head, humming happily within the hug. "Nothing to be sorry for. You are expressive in your own way. This one has picked up on it," he intones, reaching up to tap the side of her snout with a digit. "With what- how often you tease this one relentlessly, and how much you chuckle and laugh, this one doesn't need scents to go off of for you."
He pauses, then rubs his neck. "... but it did take this one being /incredibly/ dense to realize all that at first..."
He shakes his head. "No matter. This one is more than happy to see you as well, Vaermiir." Skiel rumbles, feeling a bit off with his silver scales mostly visible, but as he looks down to inspect, something crosses his mind, and he perks up.
"Ah! This one got you something!" he chirps, turning to get his pack and rifle through it.
It was finally a moment where Vaera seemed just a touch embarassed, by the way she fidgeted with the hug momentarily. "I guess it is easy to show this one is happy around you. And, this one was not sure if you were avoiding feelings or not, so they never pressed the issue." The red makari chuffs. "And, this one likes to think they are okay understanding you as well to degree."
"For example, you do not need to worry, there is no one else around, and this one likes to see the shine of your scales, and the strength of what you have withstood." She adds, running one hand over them as she speaks, only to stop and tilt her head. "Is that so? You did not need to, but, if you got me something, then that means so much to this one. They are happy you thought to get a gift."
Skielstregar rumbles warmly, nudging his snout against hers. "This one is glad you are at ease around this one. Truly."
He pauses some as his hands are in the bag. Still that mortal scar was a point of unease for him, but he softly sighs and smiles some. And looks down. Proud and easily embarrassed. "This one will strive to be better about... being shiny." He winks.
"Ah! Yes!"
Rustle. Rustle. Clink.
The man pulls his large hand out of his bag, and holds it palm up towards the redscale. "This one saw it in the markets in city. It reminded this one of you."
His fingers uncurl to reveal a silver chained necklace with a simple, teardrop shaped bright red ruby that glitters in the midday sun. He fidgets a bit, glancing up at her only to look down at his lap. "... this one hopes you like it..."
"Well, this one is definitely appreciative about further efforts in that regard." Vaera chuckles, hugging Skielstregar again until he moved to take out the object. The red makari peers down at the object, and chuffs, but she makes no move to take it. "It reminds me of us. Silver and red." She says. "And I like it very much Skielstregar, and only more so knowing who it came from. Though, this one would rather you were the one to put it on for me, since it is a gift from you, after all."
Skielstregar blinks, then he dips his head in that bashful manner. "Yes, this one suppose it does," he rumbles after the hug.
Blinking, he perks up some and nods quickly. "Oh! Yes! Of course." He fumbles with the latch, it having been clearly adjusted for larger fingers (and talons) as he leans forward to loop the simple jewelry around her neck as he closes the clasp. He adjusts it some so it hangs properly on her sternum.
The silverscale grins at the sight. "... you look nice with it, just like this one thought..."
Vaera leaned back and lifted her head as Skielstregar moved to put the necklace on, only when he was finished lifting the pendant up with the palm of her hand.
"Skielstregar, this this one thinks you would say that this one looks nice with nothing at all." The redscale chuckles. "But, you are right. It is a beautiful stone, picked out with care and consideration by you, Skielstregar. This one will cherish it for so many years to come, much as this one cherishes you."
The hunter sighs, and pulls him into another hug. "You have been worried with so many things going on in the city, yet still this one finds you have time to think of me. So, thank you."
Skielstregar blinks. Then looks to his lap. "... well, um, yes, of course... this one..-" He stops before he embarrasses himself further and clears his throat. "... this one is glad you like it so."
Now he's in yet another embrace, and he loops his arms around her waist. He mumbles, "... it was nothing out of the norm, as this one thinks about you quite often..."
"The only problem is, now this one will need to find something similarly stunning to gift for you." Vaera chuckles. "Not a bad problem to have of course, but it will need to be done. And this one likes finding things for you.
The red makari's tail flicks around to find Skielstregar's, brushing against the clasp that was hopefully there to accentuate the point.
"Is that the case? This one thinks of you as well. It is certainly a pleasant thing to keep on one's mind, yes? And always quite motivating."
Skielstregar scratches his neck, glancing to the tea brewing. "You already got this one nice things," he mentions, jangling the silver necklace that holds his holy symbol. And by extension, the bangle.
His tail finds hers easily. "A great motivator. Especially if we are on a job."
He clears his throat, and rubs the side of his face as he glances between the ground, the kettle, and the tent. "... shall we get our tea and continue conversation elsewhere...?"
"And this one can get you so many more. This one likes seeing you enjoy them, and you wearing them of course." Vaera chuckles. "You are worth every single thing this one can do for you, Skielstregar, so do not worry about it."
"I am the one resistant to fire, so allow me to get the tea. You are right, we can have our tea inside." Vaera agrees, letting her tail thump once against Skielstregar's. She stands up, pauses, and a hand undoes the cloth she was wearing, only to have it tossed unceremoniously to cover the silverscale's snout and eyes. Vaera went to hop to the fire to gather the mugs and kettle that was boiling, and hop off to the tent afterwards, slipping inside while chuckling to herself.
Skielstregar rumbles warmly as he leans back. "... and this one thinks similarly of you."
"Yes, this one is well aware that you are- ack!" Thud! The large man falls back, blinded by the sudden cloth attack. Once he gets himself situated and recovered, he tosses the cloth aside. "Oooh Firebraaand..~!" he trills, getting to his feet and all but running into the tent after her.
-End Scene-
